The December solstice happens at the same instant for everyone, everywhere on Earth and this year the solstice occurs tomorrow, on Thursday December 21st at 16:28 GMT.
The winter solstice happens every year when the Sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. In other words, it is when the North Pole is tilted farthest away from the Sun, delivering the fewest hours of sunlight of the year.
The Sun is directly overhead of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere during the December solstice and is closer to the horizon than at any other time in the year, meaning shorter days and longer nights.
The shortest day of the year lasts for 7 hours 49 minutes and 41 seconds in Britain, which is 8 hours, 49 minutes shorter than the June Solstice. As such, Wednesday December 20th is the longest night of the year with the sun not rising until 08:04 GMT on Thursday morning...

Well the days, very slowly, start getting longer after the Winter solstice, but here in the Mid-Atlantic, the worst of the winter is yet to come. December generally isnt too bad, but January and February and even March can be brutal, very cold and with the heaviest snows. But if we get a blizzard in March, at least theres a good chance that it wont be dark when I drive home from work through it. :)

Boooo. They want me to subscribe in order to read the whole article.
Yeah, I know, that's why we only have an excerpt here. Tell them to have a Merry Christmas, that'll destroy their blood pressure.
Oh, but wait -- turns out that the whole version is in the Google cache, and the graphics are all quite nice. Haven't had time to read the rest, just found out. Sure hope no one does anything rash, like post the link. Dammit, I've been hacked.
Yeah, THAT really stinks...

The back to school stuff seems to go out at the stores right after the July 4th stuff gets clearanced, and not long before the end-of-summer Labor Day cookout specials. I guess the way to fool ourselves is to observe the summer and winter solstices as “midsummer” and “midwinter”, even though the worse of winter is yet to hit us, and the heat of summer hasn’t yet started. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, and summer’s lease hath all too short a date, blah blah blah. I love Shakespeare, other than all the cliches. /rimshot
That’s kinky. ;^D
The Erf’s temperatures seem to lag the solar input by about a month.
Radiant heat in the middle of the (Winter) day is nice though.
:)
HERETICS!!! Oh, sorry.

Hey, a tidbit — pipe organs, so familiar at least to our cultural memory, as being indelibly associated with large churches, were not easily adopted, because the sound was “too Jewish”. [”The Jewish Connection” by M. Hirsh Goldberg]

That’s called dressing down.
The article still doesn’t say why......or what they are celebrating for. Not that I care.
