Archaeologists working in sand dunes on the central California coast have dug up an intact plaster sphinx that was part of an Egyptian movie set built more than 90 years ago for Cecil B. DeMille's epic "The Ten Commandments."

The 300-pound sphinx is the second recovered from the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes.

Not the 1956 Version.

The Silent one from the 1920’s.

One of the most memorable movie-going experiences I have ever had was seeing The Ten Commandments on the big screen at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. It was accompanied by a theater organist who got his start in the 1920's and was a master at his craft. He said he didn't even need music. He knew what to play for each scene because he knew the movie so well.

Some of the scenes were filmed at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in San Francisco while it was being built. This imposing Catholic church stands near Washington Square in the North Beach neighborhood.

“90 years? The Ten Commandments was released in 1956.”

The original debut was in 1446 B.C.... with a cast of thousands, and very realistic special effects...

That church in SF is beautiful!
This is St Peter and Paul Basilica in Lewiston, Maine where I grew up.
It is also called The Nickel and Dime Cathedral.

Yes, the church in the Italian section of SF, where DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe got married.

Some sci-fi author, I think James P. Hogan, wrote a book about events on the not-so-distant-future Earth, describing how a dig in Tunisia turned up evidence of an alien civilization which turned out to be the remnants of Star Wars Tatooine sets.

This reminds me of that...

Archiologists got all gaga at finding ancient pyramids in The California desert. Then came to find out it was a 1955 movie set ‘Land of the Pharohs’.

Wasn’t the set for D.W. Grifith’s Intolerance (1916) found under the sands a few years back?

This is from the city in California the Egyptians created 5,000 years ago. Not a movie set. It is a cover-up along with the alien spacecraft found nearby.

1923 silent movie set was deliberately buried in the sand. A more familiar version with Heston as Moses was done in 1956.
