The last Republican to win Essex was probably Tom Kean Sr. in 1985. When did Essex County trend sharply to the left? I live in NJ, but I do not know much about Essex politics since I am a Central Jerseyan.

You would be surprised...most of the suburbs and all the rural areas are quite conservative. Trenton, Camden, and Newark are liberal cesspool urban centers dragging the rest of the state down.

That's really not true anymore. That used to be the case, and it explains why a Republican like Tom Kean could win Essex County even as recently as the 1980s. The suburban areas surrounding Newark were much more conservative then.
What has made New Jersey much more "blue" since the 1980s is that those suburban areas have turned into prime destinations for wealthy New Yorkers looking to flee from places like Brooklyn. Look at towns like Montclair, South Orange and Maplewood. Suburban Essex County is just as radically liberal as Newark and Camden these days.
Hmmm..I’m centered in central Jersey....the area leans liberal but some areas went for Trump last year.
Ocean County is solid Republican. As is Sussex and Hunterdon. Bergen used to be red, buts it’s solid Red now.

Clinton NJ used to be a nice little patriotic town... now it’s a liberal toilet, there are Welcome Islam signs (Hate Has No Home Here)....all over the place....I hate it, I never shop there anymore....The mayor is a POS also.
