Flight 37 departed in Friday evening from Los Angeles International Airport and arrived at Singapores Changi Airport nearly 18 hours later.
...
United operates the flight with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which carries 252 passengers.
The previous record-holder for the longest flight from the United States was service between Dallas and Sydney, Australia, by Qantas that covered 8,575 miles.
In 2013, Singapore Airlines ended nonstop flights to Los Angeles, but the airline said it intends to restart the service next year.
United and Singapore Airlines also have flights between San Francisco and Singapore that are 8,446 miles.
...
The Singapore-Los Angeles flight is the worlds third-longest behind Quantas 9,032-mile flight between Doha, Qatar, and Auckland, New Zealand.

I used to play to Asia 30 years ago
JFK to Tokyo to HK
or San Fran to HK To Singapore
Once flew JFK to Heathrow to Delhi to Singapore
For heck of it
Singapore Airlines Heathrow to Singapore
Forward Cabin
A bucket list thing before I knew what that was
In 2011 I took a Thai Airways from LAX to Bangkok non stop, 17 hours. Unfortunately they stopped the flight, wish they’d start it back up. However, I did not really notice any difference between a 17 hour flight to BKK or the DFW/HKG 14 hour flight, with both your rear end suffers.
Good Lord, I can barely tolerate the 5-6 hour flights to the mainland unless I pay extra $$ for legroom.
In the good days before the TSA, I would fill a water bottle with white wine and sip myself into a doze.
Now, I writhe within 1 hour without seat room. Cannot pay for 1st class, so just stay home and stick with inter-island hops.
Singapore airlines is outstanding...took the big Airbus flying there out of LA 3 years ago...through Tokyo. Business class...excellent flying experience.
Really debating whether I should spring for first class to get upstairs, before everyone quits flying the big one.
Planned to fly Dubai to Atlanta once... 15 hours nonstop. Diverted to JFK due to bad weather and low fuel. Slept on the floor, then waited in line for two hours until the counter opened, then multiple assholes bum rushed the ticket gate. No thanks! (20 trips across the Atlantic burnt me out on air travel.)
Despise the TSA.
Bought a rail pass and made three round trips riding the rails from IL to CA. Glad to have that out of my system.
Been hiking the Pacific Crest Trail on foot (3,200 miles and counting) since 2012, walking across CA, OR & WA. I think I’ve finally found my ‘mode of transportation’ niche.
Do it! The frickin’ seats down below are tiny.
How are the flight attendants? I remember some pretty hot print advertisements in USA Today in early 90s
I get pissed off just flying Tokyo to California; Tokyo to Dallas really gets on my nerves. I get stir crazy if I’m not doing things, and not doing things is all there is to do on a plane. These ultra long flights would just kill me, seeing as I have such a hard time sleeping on airplanes too.
Walking is the best. I walk at least 6+ miles every night and more on the weekends when I’m out and about on my booze walks and listening to my podcasts. It’s extremely relaxing and even good exercise I suppose. I figure I cruise at least 2,200 miles a year and I’ve been doing that for more than 10 years. That’s a lot of miles when you add it all up. The first time I thought about how far I might have strolled was just a month or two ago, and seeing that number was pretty gratifying and extremely surprising.
Walking is the best. Amen!
Kind of an irony that a conversation about walking takes hold on a thread about Boeing 787 Dreamliners and their long haul potential. LOL.
Many people from the far east find their way to the Pacific Crest Trail, and even more can be found on the John Muir Trail.
Great job on your well established walking routine. Puts you in the upper percentile of the world’s population. Walking ALWAYS transforms one’s thoughts from what is rattling around inside our heads before we start, to something else guaranteed to change our attitude for the better.
I used to fly United 747’s to Asia in Biz Class (for them, upstairs). It was much nicer than below in First. More feeling like I was on a private plane as the compartment was smaller. Also more quiet.
And I’d do it while 747’s are still in use. They seem to be on their way out of service (sadly).
As a widebody CPT I can only say I’m glad I’m not operating it.
It’s great to always have a camera with you too. You never know what you may find throughout the year. I carry my Nikon D300, but it can start feeling pretty heavy. I do my walking home from work, so usually have all kinds of junk from the office, change of shirt or sweater, etc. in the bag. Traveling light on the weekends is best. Fortunately we can drink on the streets and booze is sold 24 hours at convenience stores, which are literally as often as several per mile, so it makes the nights rather pleasant ;) not to mention that there is no crime and no “bad neighborhoods” in Japan, so you can go anywhere, any time of night or day without one single worry.
I can imagine. That sounds about as appealing as flying B-52s around the arctic circle every day. I would hope long haul pilots get out of their seats for at least 30 minute breaks every three to four hours.
Try this site. https://www.seatguru.com/ The upper deck on 747s is usually some kind of business class.
I got my chance to fly upper deck comming back from my second deployment to Iraq. It was a United 747 on charter. Nice plane, their seats weren’t quite flat, but we were headed home and didn’t care.
I flew to the Middle East 3-4x a year a couple of years back (military TDY). I would try hard to have a layover in Europe as I hated the 12+ hour direct flights from the East Coast.
Walking around for a bit and having a sit down meal helps considerably.
I am so glad I don’t make those overseas flights any more...and could not imagine 18 hours in the air.
#3 on the list, thanks BenLurkin.
