Televangelist Joel Osteen cancelled services at his Houston megachurch Sunday and has yet to reopen its doors despite the fact that thousands of flooded-out residents are desperately seeking shelter.
The perpetually smiling pastor told followers on Twitter on Monday to lean on their faith.
Jesus promises us peace that passes understanding, he wrote. Thats peace when it doesnt make sense.
But Osteens comforting words didnt sit well with critics, who want to know why the doors to his 16,800-seat arena at his Lakewood Church near downtown Houston are closed.
You have taken so much money away from your people to live like a king, entertainment publicist Danny Deraney blasted. Its the least you could do.

As sleazy as the rest of the TV hustlers
While I would say it's premature to criticize, it looks like others are better prepared. Oh, look... here's two churches and a VFW Post [all of which have fewer resources] that did open their doors and have probably been on the emergency response list for years :
Fayette County residents along river told to leave. Officials have expanded their evacuation order to all Fayette County residents living along thre Colorado River, amid projections that the river will crest at 49 feet overnight. The city has opened three shelters: Second Baptist Church on Von Minden Street, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church on Walnut Street and VFW Post 5254 off the La Grange Texas Fairgrounds
A venue of that size probably has med and security personnel on their staff and some sort of food service capabilities. They are probably no where near adequate to deal with a large multi-day/week shelter operation.
When renovate is was probably renovated to maybe handle a day long conference or event where they would serve lunch and provide your standard stadium public toilets. We saw what happened at the Super Dome and Convention Center during Katrina when you have large numbers of people and inadequate food and sanitation (ie showers).
Maybe he’s afraid of his church being trashed. But OTOH -
“I care far less for FReepers who ignorantly bash someone just because they dont like him.”
you mean like when you posted this:
“Grow a brian and stop emoting like a moran”
Ye of little faith.
Remember when Chick-fil-A helped stranded motorist in a snow storm? They weren’t prepared, it didn’t stop them from doing the right thing to honor God.
I would image they have food service capabilities, being a former stadium, but not nearly enough food and no way to get it there from the vendors who may be flooded.
Hot Dogs! Get your holy blessed hot dogs!
Wait, you don’t have $6? Get out.

Lakewood Church has always been dedicated to convenience and comfort, a church representative wrote in the statement posted on the churchs website. And now our guests will be able to enjoy a variety of snacks like hot dogs, popcorn, and sodas during the service, without ever leaving their seats.
If various trial runs conducted throughout the past year are any indication, the concession vendors will be a hit among churchgoers, while adding something like mid-seven-figures to the annual bottom line, according to sources.
Among the snacks on the menu are Victory Vanilla Cones, Champion Chips, Name-Em-And-Claim-Em Nachos, and Destiny Dogs.
Well, one thing is for sure, Joel Osteen is controversial, there are no fence-sitters here.
Personally, I don’t like any church that seems to be so focused on the personality of the head pastor and his wife.
I hope this megachurch does good charitable work in the community and around the world.
Recall that his “pastor” wife got thrown off a commercial flight (first class seat, naturally) for causing a big fuss.
Filthy lucre indeed. Or, size of wallet = value as a Christian
Prosperity Gospel means don’t open the doors for people with nothing but wet clothes on their backs, there’s no money for jet fuel in it.
No fan of Osteen, but my church cancelled services as well. No point of having people taking unnecessary risks with the amount of street flooding.
His mother Dootie survived liver cancer. She was down to 80 lbs and had 6 weeks left to live.
I liked his parents but I don’t care for him.
Thank you God!
Talk about jumping to conclusions without all the facts, good grief. Do you know if Osteen offered the arena and was told “no, we got it”? Are the available shelters full and thousands of people have nowhere to go? Do you know what type of other assistance or aid he may have offered? Those are just a few questions to ponder while you are judging.

There is a difference between services and offering shelter.
Beaumont and Port Arthur churches that don’t have near the resources of Lakewood in Houston are offering shelter.
Well, I bet that charlatan could have put up millions worth of supplies for just such an occasion.
Grow a brian and stop emoting like a moran
Man, I can't even respond to that with a straight face.
Touche.
