Televangelist Joel Osteen cancelled services at his Houston megachurch Sunday and has yet to reopen its doors — despite the fact that thousands of flooded-out residents are desperately seeking shelter.
The perpetually smiling pastor told followers on Twitter on Monday to lean on their faith.
“Jesus promises us peace that passes understanding,” he wrote. “That’s peace when it doesn’t make sense.”
But Osteen’s comforting words didn’t sit well with critics, who want to know why the doors to his 16,800-seat arena at his Lakewood Church near downtown Houston are closed.
“You have taken so much money away from your people to live like a king,” entertainment publicist Danny Deraney blasted. “It’s the least you could do.”

I’m no fan of Osteen but wouldn’t that arena have a flooding problem of its own? Of course if it did, he’d be asking for funds to repair it already.

The announcement to the congregation was that services were cancelled because flooding made it hazardous to travel to the church
You think it is safe for anyone to travel there?
Do you think the members of the congregation are not dealing with the needs of their own families and neighbors in Houston?
Do you think the church is prepared to just suddenly staff an emergency shelter for weeks or months ahead? You think they just magically summon food water sanitation medical and security personnel?

Thing like this really separate sheep from goats. To the faithful, God is pretty imaginative in coming up with resources. Wrapped up in the world, this is the best that Osteen and you can come up with.
Just another holy roller fleecing the suckers...hes just more successful at it than most of the grifters.

This. The church does not have to offer anything. Is it even in a good place to BE shelter? So many stone throwers, so little time. BTW, NOT a fan of Olsteen.
Agreed but if it is not flooded he should be offering shelter to those without. I have heard him speak, he tickles the ear and promises prosperity if you help him prosper.
Thing about the tv preachers is when you get sick or your wife or kid is diagnosed with cancer they are no where to be found, but the local pastor and congregations are the ones praying , visiting and helping your family. And who do you give your money too?
