Joel Osteen shuts megachurch amid flooding crisis

Televangelist Joel Osteen cancelled services at his Houston megachurch Sunday and has yet to reopen its doors — despite the fact that thousands of flooded-out residents are desperately seeking shelter.

The perpetually smiling pastor told followers on Twitter on Monday to lean on their faith.

“Jesus promises us peace that passes understanding,” he wrote. “That’s peace when it doesn’t make sense.”

But Osteen’s comforting words didn’t sit well with critics, who want to know why the doors to his 16,800-seat arena at his Lakewood Church near downtown Houston are closed.

“You have taken so much money away from your people to live like a king,” entertainment publicist Danny Deraney blasted. “It’s the least you could do.”

Lots of judging going on, don’t call it discernment either.

The roads around the church and probably the first floor of the church itself are flooded.

Even if it were not flooded you’d be asking people to get through floodwaters to get to a place that has no food, no water, and no way out.

You’d create another Astrodome crisis like what happened in 2005.

Why the hell would you want to do that???

Of course the OTHER version of the article deals with what would have happened if he did open his church:

“Joel Osteen, in yet another attempt to gain publicity, threw open the doors to his church to all who need shelter in this terrible storm. Since he does not have the capability to provide shelter-related services (food, clothing, bedding, medical care, etc.), he is relying on the assistance of government agencies.

This raises an important question regarding the separation of church and state and whether Osteen is attempting to convert the people staying in his church to his radical, hate-filled, form of Christianity (i.e., he’s against perverts in girls’ locker rooms). Ima Leek, head of the ACLU in Houston, considers this to be exactly the case, and has filed suit in federal court to get an injunction regarding this blatant attempt at proselytizing...”

"That's what it says in Malachi 3:10 that when you 'bring your whole tithe into the storehouse, I (God) will open up the windows of heaven and pour out blessings you can't contain.'"   (Victoria Osteen , source ==> Joel & Victoria's Blog.)

(She didn't mention there that the poured out blessings they can't contain were actually many, many raindrops.)

“if you had bothered to read the article, pics showing no flooding of the site or surrounding roads.”

Per the FEMA flood map the church at 3700 Southwest Fwy, Houston, TX 77027 (FEMA flood map #48201C0860L) the church is in the area impacted by the floodwaters.

The parking garage is flooded with the water continuing to rise.

While I personally don’t care for Osteen I care far less for FReepers who ignorantly bash someone just because they don’t like him.

Which is the exact same thing the left is doing to President Trump.

Silverleaf, I concur with your comments on why Olsteen has closed his mega-church. And the hurricane is not over and apparently getting ready for a 2nd swing through the area. Yes the parking lot is not flooded, but is there power and water available? Has the church ever had a plan to be a disaster shelter? Having been in the Army and seen a couple of disaster relief operations, they take contingency planning to have ‘on the shelf ready for execution.’

Time will tell us about the wisdom of Olsteen’s decision. And I am among those who are “not an Olsteen fan.” Right now I will give him the benefit of doubt because I don’t have enough facts to start slinging stones at him.

“Didn’t pictures show it dry?”

No, the pictures I saw on TMZ showed the arena right next to the flooded Southwest Freeway. The part of the arena you can see is above the floodwaters but the basement is flooded and so is the freeway right next to it.

It’s not safe to be there.

The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod - which built 6,000 houses after Katrina for victims, already had hundreds of volunteers in place on the ground before the storm made landfall.

No doubt there are numerous other churches doing the same.

Our little church opens its doors during storm events so people can use bathrooms and make calls and catch some sleep.

Judgmental, judgmental.

Did anyone post a photo of the church? Is it, gee, possibly underwater?

If not, then I’m with you, but if so, shame on so many for rushing to condemn.

Since the heathen 1st class flight attendant didn't answer quick enough in the affirmative to Vickie's "Do you know who I am?!!" and got kicked off the plane to the Holy Blessed ski resort of Vail they now have a private jet.

The Holy Blessed Gulfstream, Hallowed be thy name.

Joel actually looks solemn. Or has gas and the Beano hasn't kicked in yet.

>> “Or Christian love.” <<

A mythical concept.

Mostly “Christians” are looking for that “Get out of Hell Free” card, of which none have been offered.

There will be a great need for orthodontists in the lake that burns.
