Fox chairman and CEO Dana Walden said the network is exploring new ways to continue the franchise, even though it released star Corey Hawkins out of his commitment for future installments.
We are really exploring what the future might be, perhaps as an anthology storytelling franchise, Walden told reporters Tuesday at the Television Critics Association tour in Beverly Hills. We felt really good about a lot of the last season. It was a hard decision to make, whether to bring it back or not. We let Corey out of his obligation so he could do his Broadway play. It felt like the right thing to do, to take the pressure off around upfronts.
But Fox continues to believe there is still time left on the franchise.
It felt like, where we left off, we can continue telling stories about those exact characters, Walden continued. It felt very close to the original. Our goal is to make something that generally extends the life of the franchise. Viewers got a taste of 24 again. It had the urgency of real time. It whetted their appetite.
Walden said the network has met with longtime franchise producers Howard Gordon, Brian Grazer, and Joel Surnow about the next evolution.
Last season, the new iteration of 24 with Hawkins averaged 6.08 million viewers and a 1.6 rating in adults 18-49. Former star Kiefer Sutherland was an executive producer on the show.
As well made as 24:Legacy was, and we did think it was well made, telling that story that was so close to iterations that people had seen, begged a kind of comparison and made people think, Oh its the same thing and Kiefer isnt in it,' Fox President David Madden told reporters. And obviously Kiefer was not available to us. We said that kind of ticking clock urgency can apply to all sorts of venues so were exploring a couple different avenues right now. Were not locked into one yet. But Howard and Brian are really excited about it. 24 will be back on our air.
The network seemed less committed to bringing back Prison Break but Fox execs arent ready to close the book on that franchise that returned to middling ratings this spring.
Were always interested in new angles and stories that come out of our library, Madden added. If the producers thought about how to explore a new iteration of it, were be excited to talk about it.
I watched last season, but it just wasn't the same.
Yes it is, they just don’t know it.
Too bad they killed off Curtis—I could have seen him becoming the main character.
No Jack Bauer, no 24....
I’ll call my cable company. I better not lose channel 24. There ain’t enough local channels as it is and that’s one of the better ones.
Perhaps this time they could hire real writers. Because the last one had a script that sounded like it was written by a couple of lilly white Slovakians who had never spent time in America, let alone knew any black people.
The show grew on my as it went along. I think you need to bring back SOME of the original cast. And don’t turn around and hire an actor that was on a clone (Homeland) just months before.
100% agreement!
That blonde girl from the UK storyline (Yvonne something or other, previously the spy girl in “Chuck”) would have gotten me to give it a chance. I like her and her character in the UK story was a good one I thought. For some reason though they just got rid of her after appearing to set her up as Jack’s heir. Go figure.
Last night, out of boredom, and not being able to find anything else, I started watching the first season of the original “24”. Still pretty good.
Keifer Sutherland is only 51 and certainly still able to continue as an action star. Lord if Bruce Willis and Stallone can do it, Sutherland can.
“24” is one of those shows, given the current political and military climate, could still do well.
Kiefer aged 10 years in just 24 hours...................
This is one of those shining examples of the problem with the franchise model of entertainment. There’s really no reason why they can’t make a clock ticking spy show that is NOT 24. But the franchise model says if you have a “similar” property you need to retro-fit this idea you have kicking our to “fit” within that property. Often times those changes damage the story that was originally designed, and of course you often can’t get the original stars, and you have all of the baggage of people that didn’t like or got tired of that original property. Legacy probably would have been a better show, and better received, not named 24. Maybe a little “in the spirit of” in the advertising to reach that audience. Franchise addiction wounded it both in the making and the showing, and they insist on doing it some more.
Right. 24 was over as soon as Keifer left.
It wasn't so much the absence of Sutherland as it was the light-weight Hawkins trying to make believe he was of the same caliber as Bauer.
Also, the writing left much to be desired. I just do not care to watch TV/movies with heavy thuggery/gangs and drugs.

I dropped Designated Survivor when they had their gun-control theme in 2 consecutive episodes. It was just too much liberal agenda.
No Chloe, with her jalapeno-sucking scowl, no 24
Never was a fan of the original but this sequel was unwatchable from the git-go for me. The reason I had for not watching is the same reason it was a failure from the start, a black guy in the lead role. This is why nobody wanted to watch it.
As long as I have Cable 10 Aurora, Illinois Community Access Channel, I’m fine.
Yes. Must have Chloe, too! TY.
