The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
I was printing some recipes to try last night, and right in the middle it spit out a blank page. So I replaced the black ink and same result. So I replaced the color ink. Still no good.
Has 2 blinking lights and I have no idea what they really are, but usually turning off the printer and turning it back on makes them stop and then it works. Not this time.
So I fiddled with it and figured out how to get to the troubleshooter. HP ran a diagnostic and I read that the printer couldn't work with a 3.0 port. Since I didn't change anything that made no sense-same computer port I've been using since day of this printer.
Anyway, the good news is that we got about an inch of rain total for Thursday and Friday so I didn't have to water what little is left of my garden and got a little more in the rain barrels.
Hubby got some tomatoes which I still have to process tonight - they've been waiting a while, and he just brought in some more. I usually just freeze them, but the freezer is full - another chore on my list for next week is to go through the freezers, and convert any leftovers from last year to something or dehydrate them to free up some room, but mostly just to reorganize and see what is left there that I might have forgotten.
The chest freezer really needs defrosting, but I'm just going to ignore that a while longer. When the weather is colder, I can sit the stuff outdoors while I work on that.
I have been having quite a lot of back and leg pain this week. For the first time ever, I am thinking about going to a chiropractor. Daughter thinks it's the sciatic nerve - I just know it hurts.
I've been taking some turmeric and MSM supplements and drinking lots of herbal tea with cardamom, cinnamon, and loads of ginger - also eating pineapple. Found some exercises in the Physicians Desk Hand Book that I bought from Washington University, St. Louis Med. School. It all seems to be helping a bit, or maybe it's the placebo effect. LOL
Hope you are all doing well. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
I have a suggestion for your pains, from my personal experiences: see if you can figure out what causes them.
I have been able to overcome hip pain and back pain, by being alert what causes them, or to get worse, and some creative thinking.
ex: hip, I knew I was leaning very heavily on that side, when working on computer.
It was hurting SOO BAD I stopped, desperate, to do something. Then I recalled something I had heard, and — put something in the shoe on the other side to lift it a little. It worked immediately. Beats an operation !
My back sometimes starts to hurt, and I know I have been sitting, too long, in a bad position. Doesn’t hurt while doing it, just after. Same with how I lie down at nite.
Just passing on, hope it might help.
we're tired so no watering of the garden tonite...
we've had one zuke, picked our garlic, enjoying the last of the lettuce, and expect some egg plant and beans pretty soon...
hot and dry in eastern Washington....
I have planning the fall garden on my list of things to do this coming week. Going to find all the things that can mature in 60 days or less - plant them in pots and put them on the patio that is shaded a good part of the day, then transplant them. That will take less water to get them going.
After the first frost, I think I may plant some winter wheat.
I was thinking that the chiropractor might be able to take some x-rays and see what the problem is. It may just be that the osteoporosis in the back is getting worse - but after the parathyroidectomy, they told me that condition should get better - not worse.
Very nice. Thanks for the Pics. I absolutely love the Yukon gold taters. We had some that hubby grew this year - baby roasters about 2-3 inches in diameter.
Melted butter, olive oil, thyme, rosemary, garlic, ginger in the dish and brushed all the exposed areas of the tater. Served bacon wrapped asparagus and roasted chicken. The Asparagus was a new recipe - I didn’t like it. By the time the bacon was done, the Asparagus was too done for my taste.
I will pick my first tomato tomorrow. The potatoes seem to be doing well. Beans have started to take off, the pole beans are starting to climb the fence. Squash is starting to produce, but none large enough to pick yet.
I’m still trying to kill my Yucca! The stuff is indestructible! Pull them out, but leave a 1/8 inch of root in the ground, and they grow right back!
I sure am jealous of that corn! I didn’t get nary a single one this year. On the bright side, the Schwan man had some organic corn kernels - a mix of white and yellow, so I bought some. I’ll add a handful to my veggie soup and maybe some chowders.
Boy oh Boy - I sure was glad to get that first tomato this year. I made a “deconstructed” BLT. All the ingredients for the sandwich, except for the bread. I’m still experimenting with low carb bread recipes and haven’t found one I like yet.
Well, it is edible, so if TEOTWAWKI or SHTF, you could try making lemonade out of lemons so to speak and eat it. LOL
Early corn yup yup. Picked and ate nine ears today...deelishusss!
] I don't do nutri-foods m'self, but, pls be advised that sis tells me that "fresh is great, pills are garbage". Just fwiw, happpy to help if can. Smooches, SAJ
I wont go into a long thing, as I could, but just suggest trying to do something to *stretch* the back. As when lying down and stretching.
Things happen, as you mentioned, when nerves get compressed as when the disks get closer together when the pads? between them are compressed — in one way or another, or shrink.
I find when I cause something to hurt, later after I did it, it takes time to get better. Less time or more time.
Yes, the exercises I mentioned in the Physicians Handbook, are doing exactly that - stretching the back, I also skipped my weight lifting session to give it a chance to rest, and I took a bath in Epsom Salts which gave me a great deal of relief while I was in the hot water.
All of your suggestions are right on the money. Thanks.
??? weight lifting ??? when back hurts ??? IDTS I don’t think so !!!
I don’t have a micro planer. Are you growing it in Missouri? I do have some fresh organic spice, and some capsules that are from a supposedly good source.
Mostly, I have been using fresh ginger root since that is one of the few spices we get that is real and not processed.
Where did you get the plant to begin with?
