New Study Finds That Coconut Oil Isn't Healthy
NBC Mnbc ^ | 6/19 | Brandon Lopez

A new study shows that coconut oil isn’t as healthy as many believed it was. In fact, it’s not healthy at all.

According to the American Heart Association, a recent survey showed that 72 percent of Americans surveyed rated coconut oil as a “healthy food,” compared to 37 percent of nutritionists.

The report went on to say that the saturated fat content of coconut oil is 82 percent, which is the bad type of fat. A chart in the document shows that coconut oil has more saturated fat than lard, canola oil or even butter.

The results of a study conducted by the AHA show that coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol and has "no known offsetting favorable effects." The AHA concluded that they advise against the use of coconut oil.

Olive oil and vegetable oil are considered to be better alternatives.

#29. Hell, Rosie O’Donnell and Al Gore must be in heaven. And they can light themselves on fire on a cold night and read the newspapers by their own body’s light.

Yep, saturated fat is SO bad that if you have none at all in your diet you’ll die.

It’s like CO2, the “bad” part of air, so bad, that if we had none all plants would die, and all animals would starve to death AND asphyxiate from lack of oxygen.

Prove it. There are no clinical studies that show that. They only have studies that show that saturated fat raises cholesterol. And it raises both LDL (bad) and HDL (good) so prove it's really bad for you. In fact there are clinical studies that show otherwise.

AGREED! Remember when eggs were so bad for you, and now they are ‘the incredible edible egg’. And pork was awful and dangerous to eat, it is now ‘the new white meat!’

COCONUT OIL is one of best oils you can use to cook at higher temperatures, it does not raise your cholesterol, unless you eat lots of carbs with it. Who does these studies? idiots? Olive Oil is great but it does not taste good with eggs cooked in it. There is a cardiologist who has made his life study on diet, oils, and what causes clogged arties, it isn’t SATURATED FAT! I read his articles and have known this for a long time.

DR ATKINS diet got a bad rap for years, with low fat diets, and the amount of heart surgeries that come from low fat diets is really astounding. Of course, any time you have a ‘way of life’ food diet, you don’t eat like a pig, that’s just common sense!

I agree with you, about nervous system health.

Soy is one of worst things you can eat, Tofu, Soy Milk, and I have to search for protein bars without Soy Lecithins?? Quest is only brand that doesn’t use Soy, it uses Milk.

FADS come and go but you can bet your life on GOD’S NATURAL PRODUCTS LIKE BUTTER, COCONUT OIL, OLIVE OIL, BUTTERMILK, GRASS FED BEEF, EGGS, CHICKEN, AND THINGS WITHOUT SO MUCH ADDITIVES. All things in moderation will give you the life you are supposed to have. Add exercise and it’s all good.

“Not true. What dope wrote this garbage?”

Many of the hundreds of “news” outlets that picked up this nonsense also added that “coconut fat is as unhealthy as beef fat and butter”

ROTFLOL!

“Jury is still out on caffeine and salt as well.”

not really. most studies find nothing bad about consuming reasonable amounts of coffee, and a great number of studies show minor positive health benefits.

As to salt, studies have shown the FedGov recommended amount is about 1/3 of the optimal amount, namely folks who eat about 3 times the recommended amount of salt daily have fewer heart attacks than those who eat the low amounts recommended. More than 3 times that amount and heart attacks go up again.

“Remember the promotion of margarine over butter, and urging people to cut down on eggs and egg yolks? Also contributed horribly.”

yes i do remember. and it killed my parents who switched from eating healthy butter to eating heart-attack and diabetes inducing margarine made from synthetic transfats.

I never bought into margarine being good. the student apartments i lived in on the east coast when going to college were infested with cockroaches, and I noticed that they’d eat practically anything except margarine; they would never go near the stuff: cockroaches did not detect margarine as food.

“Popcorn made with coconut oil needs butter or the salt won’t stick to it”

add the salt to the hot coconut oil when you add the popcorn kernels: it’ll distribute pretty well on the popped popcorn.

“Now, can you tell us which brands are the real deal?”

9 out of 10 in sold in stores are fake, regardless of the brand. Buy 10, 1 might have real olives.

“I started using avocado oil.”

probably the best non-animal oil out there. there’s a company that makes mayo out of avocado oil that’s really yummy, which is great because almost all commercial mayo and salad dressings are made with garbage soy bean oil.

however, when i need a healthy cooking fat for sauteing, i pretty much now use only homemade tallow, which is easy and inexpensive to make yourself.
