There are thousands of great male singers, but there are probably only a few that you know that really stand out. In your opinion who are the three greatest male vocalists of all time?
The most pleasant voice I have ever heard other than my Mother was the actor Ben Johnson.
I have no idea if he could sing.
Harry Nilsson
Freddie Mercury
Andrea Bocelli
I put Winwood on my list (Comment #58).
So far, I have affirmations for Winwood and Joe Cocker, who has multiple votes.
But no other votes at all for my first choice - Mick Jagger.
Sinatra,
Pavarotti,
Caruso.
Any coincidence most of the top names are italian.
PERFECT list. Add to that Duncan Sheik and this wins the thread.
No, I'm not trying to start a fight!
Nobody’s mentioned Eric Burdon.
Engelbert Humperdinck
Elvis (especially singing “American Trilogy”
Barry Gibb
Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra.
Johnny Hartman
During WWII, Stars & Stripes did a poll of American soldiers as to their favorite singer.
It came down to Frank Sinatra and Roy Acuff.
Acuff won easily.
Some singers are balladeers while others can improvise around a chord, (Sinatra could not do this although Crosby could.) Mel Torme and Ella are the best at vocal improvising.
When done properly, it's the tone poem which captivates, e.g. Bennett at 90 still makes one listen although much of his timbre is gone.
Finally Robert Plant!
Lemmy
Tom Jones
Lemmy
Steve Perry, Geoff Tate, Bruce Dickinson, Sam Cooke, Sammy Hagar, Brian Wilson, Sebastian Bach, Michael Kiske, Tom Keifer.
Thanks. I had to look up Duncan Sheik, but as soon as I saw “Barely Breathing” it clicked. I’ve always liked that song but never knew the artist.
I should also have added Jose Cura to my list. This should have been a top ten list!
Freddy Mercury, Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio!!! Geoff Tate is up there too
Any grouping has to have Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra. Bob Dylan???????!!!!!!!!!!
“Dinosaur” Era:
Frank Sinatra
Bing Crosby
Louie Armstrong
Hank Williams
60’s/70’s Era:
David Bowie
Johnny Cash
Nick Drake
80’s and Beyond Era:
Michael Stipe
Chris Cornell (RIP)
Matt Berninger
And who can possibly dislike Sons of Plunder or Warrior?
