My new-to-us lab mix has very discerning senses, spits out chewable meds even when given with his snacks. We have not had him a month yet and from the first he would take his food into the next room to look it over. Previous owners must have drugged him a lot.
Quite sure pill pockets won't work and he us not crazy for peanut butter.
Any ideas? Hope he never gets sick cause dosing him will be impossible.
Peanut butter...
Mine is supposed to be taking meds this week and knows if pills have been hidden in food. It’s impossible to unclench her teeth to shove it in.
Put it in meat. Put it in icecream.
Yep back of the throat and rub the neck and try again.
I’m just happy for him that he has you.
Enjoy him!
Not much Lab in him then....
Bacon wrap...
The butter dab has always worked with my dogs. Raw beef liver chunk with a slit works as well, but messier for me.
That, is funny.
Looking at replies....
I remember one cat I had. Years ago. I had to snake a feeding tube down her throat for about a week.
Now THAT was no picnic, believe me.
I’ve had to give pills to cats and dogs over the years. Some were easy. Some were hard.
But nothing compared to the feeding tube I had to force into that cat.
(Shudder)
Hounds can be incredibly loving and loyal pets but they’re also hardheaded and contrary at times. If you’ve earned his trust you may have to do the pill on the back of the throat and holding his muzzle shut until he swallows. But, don’t be surprised if he stops listening to you when you call for him to come to you because of it. Hardheaded and contrary, as I mentioned. Fantastic dogs with a heart of gold, though. Remember that, lol.
We have a Chihuahua that has to take daily pills. I use a syringe-add pills, add water, shake, squirt the mixture into her mouth. Then I feed her a little Yogurt on my finger. Dip lick repeat.
No prob. Get his meds in liquid and use an eye dropper.
I have recently started giving my 9 YO Shepherd Lab X glucosamin pills. The are large enough to choke a horse, so I break them in two, hide them in bacon strips and she takes the treat. After she has chewed a little bit and is preparing tosppit out the pill, I gently hold her snout up and closed and she eventually swallows the pill.
Here’s what works for me:
1. Put on some New Age music.
2. Wait until the dog is relaxed.
3. Make a peanut butter sandwich.
4. Have my wife give the dog the pill.
5. Eat the peanut butter sandwich.
6. Turn off the damn music.
Lol!
Cut about a half inch OR inch off a hot dog and stuff the pill into it thru a slit at one end.
That’s the way I do it simple.
We use sliced cheese food and mush the pill in and never have a problem. I don’t think it would be as messy as cream cheese.
