I attended the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in 2011. It's the world's largest trade show, with hundreds of new products introduced each year. What I saw were booths stuffed with future landfill: docks, dashboard mounts, adapters, robotic vacuum cleaners, 3D TVs. One afternoon, I attended a panel discussion about the rapidly approaching "connected home," referred to nowadays as the Internet of Things. The panelists promised that household devices of all kinds would soon be connected to one another and to the internet, thereby transforming the average American home into a futuristic fortress of hyperefficiency.

I used to operate every device directly from my phone, upgraded phone didn’t include an IR emitter, talk about a step backwards.
MY BAD..
We recently had to take the keys from my FIL, don’t want a self driving car now but hope the are available when it’s time for me to stop driving.
I want a loud dishwaher because that means that there is a food disposal in it and it will get the dishes cleaner.
But I also enjoy hearing the local news and the local take on the local news.
My phone can pick up my favorite stations but it isn’t really what I want.
>>Car is 2001 and pickup 2000.
Nothing connected to anything else or the internet.<<
My car is also 2001 — the idea of my car being hooked up to the internet scares the heck out of me. If it can be accessed, it can be hacked.
The same for the rest of my appliances. Just how far are we from the famous “medicine cabinet” scene in THX-1138?
>>Being that I am a lady, I would say Data.
Although an gold skinned android would work too :)<<
Tasjha Yar certainly had no complaints.
:) ;)
The Bosch dishwashers have sound insulation 365 degrees and do grind up food waste. You just dont hear it. They wash better than other ones. They dont melt plastic. They are just plain better. They cost more. They optically measure the turbidity of the water and adjust wash cycles accordingly. Mechanically they last. You can stick to your loud ones if you want. I prefer clean dishes. Since getting the Bosch I leave the kitchen till the morning. I just rinse the plates and pots and pans and throw them in. Come out squeaky clean.
You're blessed.
I can get hurt just short of drawing blood.
marry !
“Knowing the government is spying on me through my appliances kinda make me feel important.”
ROTFLOL!
During the day, on the road, listening to the farm reports ocassionally is fine. At night when the ionosphere kicks in and locals power back, internet radio is way clearer. Most stations stream and so locals can be “received” too. It’s an improvement.
Is political speech between you and your appliances covered by the First?
My “smart” TV has been connected to my wifi and the only thing it could do was tell me when it lost the connection.
Several times during a show.
It was irritating so we finally just turned off the wifi.
Works much better now.
I recently had an assignment for how to troubleshoot errors on various high tech fridges. How to fix the error when it cannot access photos saved on a server, how to fix errors when it cannot broadcast TV, how to reboot the fridge for all the sensors that can go wrong.
* People used to digital photos for everything putting family photos saved to Flickr or Shutterfly on their refrigerator
* They want to track the power it uses and get discounts from the utility for using little or feeling proud for reporting the low usage stats
* A list? What list? I save my grocery list as an Evernote file and update it from the keyboard on the fridge.
* Fridge has an error message. Push X key and we’ll call for service. Costly but convenient.
“I am very utilitarian about appliances and like. Do the job you were built nothing more nothing less. Superfluous features just mean more things that can break”
Agreed. About the only thing “electronic” I’ll put up with is a light.
