Full title: South African hunter WAS killed by a crocodile, DNA tests on human remains found inside a beast prove
DNA tests of the carcass of a crocodile shot in Zimbabwe confirm that the reptile had eaten a missing South African hunter.
Scott Van Zyl, 44, vanished last week after going on a hunting safari on the banks of the Limpopo river with a Zimbabwean tracker and a pack of dogs.
The married father-of-two, whose company runs hunting trips for foreign clients, was believed he had been eaten by crocodiles and recent tests confirm it.

The Purist
by Ogden Nash
I give you now Professor Twist,
A conscientious scientist,
Trustees exclaimed, "He never bungles!"
And sent him off to distant jungles.
Camped on a tropic riverside,
One day he missed his loving bride.
She had, the guide informed him later,
Been eaten by an alligator.
Professor Twist could not but smile.
"You mean," he said, "a crocodile."

He should have had one chambered.

They knew they had the right crocodile because he was wearing a pair of human skin boots.

How do we know the tracker companion did not kill him and took his wallet, and then threw the body in the water to be disposed off by the crocs?

Maybe the guy wanted to get his nose stretched out by the crocodiles of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River.

Good point. What knowledgeable tracker walks their client into a crocodile infested riverbank?

A weird, but common practice of Professional Hunters in Africa is to not chamber a round until just before shooting.
Crocodile attacks are very fast, and big crocks can be up over 15 ft high banks and back in the water in a second or two, before the prey understands what is happening.
Peter Hathaway Capstick wrote that he witnessed a successful predation on an man sized antelope that was 15 yards from the water’s edge, if I recall properly.
Once in the water, it is almost impossible to escape.
Big African crocks are over 12 feet long, and weigh several hundred pounds.

Gustave may be less than 60 years old. He still has most if not all of his teeth. He's six meters long, perhaps still growing and he might have 40-50 years of life left to him if he doesn't get poached first.
But so far, none of the would-be poachers have been seen alive.

In all seriousness, are crocs ever found dead of old age/natural causes or are they cannibalized when that weak.

Crocodiles whistle when you shoot them.
Sometimes it’s “I’ve Been Working On The Railroad”, but usually it’s “Purple Rain”.
