The Handmaid’s Tale Is a Riveting, Relevant, and Political Drama, So Why Won’t the Creators Say So?

Last night, Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. A frightening and incredibly gripping piece of visual storytelling from cinematographer-turned-director Reed Morano, it stands as a remarkable piece of art that speaks to atrocities committed against women around the world and throughout history.

While writer and executive producer Bruce Miller began developing the 33-year-old novel before the rise of Donald Trump, the story of women who have been stripped of all agency to exist solely as breeding vessels for the patriarchy seems all too prescient in a 2017 when immigrants are being separated from their children, facts are “alternative,” and women are losing access to healthcare at the hands of a president who’s admitted sexual assault on audiotape.

They are grasping at anything to show how evil Trump and conservatism is. A better movie to explain the general direction would be Idiocracy. Except for a small numbers of people, the world is spiraling toward the world in Idiocracy. Hopefully Trump can stem the tide.

No, I haven’t read it. But if you go back several thousand years, just about any culture will feature that sort of dynamic. But to see it in modern day, you’ll have to go to the Islamic part of the world.

Agreed. And every single member of the cast have been spewing the exact same nonsense that this could happen in “Trump’s America.” Although one of them slipped a little when she said “maybe it could happen” smile and shrugged. Maybe they’ve just been forced to say this by the production.

Yes. I know. *SIGH* Just shut up and write me a story!

I made the MISTAKE of reading the latest ‘Oprah’ rag the other evening. Good Lawd! Not a PEEP about ‘racism’ and ‘oppression’ among people of color and, ‘we women’ for EIGHT YEARS! Now, it’s freakin’ cover to cover!

I hate the political world we’re living in. The only solution I can see is that we MUST keep the Socialist Democrat Party from regaining ANY traction for a VERY long time to come! they appear to be off to a good start, though, LOL! :)

Did you READ what I posted? It doesn't sound as if you did.

Atwood took the description of the impregnation AND the title of her book directly from a book in the Old Testament of the Bible!

You even got it wrong about the Muslim stuff; though yes, many Muslims DO have insane rules for women and dress codes as well.

Oh good grief....WHY did you read Oprah's magazine?

On a HAPPIER note.....we may be outraged at what the stupid lefties/Hollyweirdos/MSM say and do, but THEY are all in far worse shape about the world, as it is now, than we are, or were, during the last 8 ye3ars. LOL

Yes, I read it. But the Old Testament is the story of the Jewish people. The NEW TESTAMENT is what Christianity is based on. So to decide that Christianity is the frightening religion based on an Old Testament story is nonsensical. There is nothing in the New Testament to link this treatment to Christianity.

The fact is, today, it is in Muslim countries that women are enslaved, not Christian countries, not the one Jewish state, Muslim countries. Why you are upset that anyone would point this out, I do not know.

I don't know what kind ( sect ) of Christianity you follow, IF you follow any; however, Christianity accepts the OT as part of their religion and JESUS WAS JEW, WHO NEVER ESCHEWED JUDAISM AND/OR THE OT !

"THE HANDMAID'S TALE" was published in 1985, which means that it was written during President Reagan's presidency.

Atwood, an American hating lefty FEMINAZI CANADIAN, wrote this book as a political polemic dystopian novel, which contains the idea that the USA "could" become this way, due to REPUBLICAN ideology and that Canada was the ONLY sane place to "escape" to.

Why are you so blind to simple statements of FACT and only want to post about Muslims/Muslim majority nations, which, though they all have crazy, inhibiting rules and dress codes for females, do NOT use them for borrowed wombs ?

WHY ARE YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO UPSET BY MY POSTS ?

WHY ARE YOU INCAPABLE OF ACCEPTING ATWOOD'S OWN WORDS ABOUT HER BOOK AND WHY HARP ON SOMETHING THAT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION WITH THE TOPIC AND WHICH WE ALL KNOW ABOUT ?

Very true. The mentally ill far-leftists are apoplectic and in dire need or medication. We just keep on keepin’ on - and b*tch about our own CongressCritters as well!

...and the next time I feel the urge to read Oprah, I’ll just find a board, pound some nails through it, and hit myself in the face for an hour or so. *SMIRK*

I have no idea why you are flipping out and going all-caps. All I am saying is that Christianity will not enslave women, Islam will. That people are projecting all the evils of Islam onto Christianity.

Personally, I'm an atheist. But I can see that Islam is dangerous, Christianity far less so, but liberals are projecting Islamic attitudes onto Christians, and I think they are foolish to do so.

I am sure you and I are ultimately on the same side, so I can't figure out why you are getting so hysterical.

Sony picked up the rights to WoT in the last week so there might be some hope it will get off the ground now. I wonder how they will make it, considering some of the fantastic elements in the first book, much less the entire series. (On read-through #8)

You refuse to admit that this book, written by an American hating, lefty Feminazi moron, who is "threatened" and disgusted by Christianity, Conservatism for POLITICAL purposes.

No, I don't refuse to admit it, I agree 100% with you. She is an American hating, lefty Feminazi moron, etc.

Do you understand? I agree with you.

All I am saying is: what she thinks Christianity is like... that's what Islam actually is.

Now do you understand what I am saying?

Pardon me whilst I go down into the basement and hit my head into the cement floor. :-(

YOU ARE A MORDANT IDIOT, WHO IS IRRATIONAL, ILLOGICAL, HAS NEVER READ THE BOOK IN QUESTION, NOR, I BET SAW THE MOVIE MADE FROM THE BOOK AND STILL REFUSES TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS HAS LESS THAN NOTHING TO DO WITH MUSLIMS !

Your entire premise has absolutely NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the book, the original movie, nor the upcoming series; though it is true AND something that everyone knows.

I didn’t say it did. I said the kind of scenario she accuses Christians of is the kind of scenario that is actually playing out in the Muslim world. You need to calm down.

In Texas I could not buy a car in the 60’s

I don't believe this. My mother bought a car in the 1950s in Texas. Her money was just as good as anyone's. How could she buy one then and you couldn't buy one in the 1960s?

Because I think that what Margaret Atwood accuses Christians of is more likely to happen in the Islamic world?

And just WHY would she have done THAT, in the early 1980s, when Muslims were hardly EVER talked about and weren't much of a blip on Canadian radar?

You haven't read the book, you haven't seen the movie made of it, I doubt that you even heard of Margaret Atwood, let alone read anything she has ever written, before this thread appeared. LOL

Look, my point is, you should have stopped digging long ago, but instead, you just keep on digging!

Have you EVER even read any dystopian sci-fi/fantasy fiction?

You want to tie Islamic stuff to something from that genre? Then read DUNE...which was published in 1965 long, long, looooooooooooooooooooong before there was al Qaeda, ISIS, terrorist plots in this country!

Better still....read BRAVE NEW WORLD, if you want to be surprised by something; though truthfully, though I enjoyed that book at 14, when I reread it many decades later, it bored me to tears.
