flight from Kiev to Israel was delayed for more than an hour on Thursday night after an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man insisted the overhead television screens were retracted or turned off. In keeping with traditional religious teachings and practices, the passenger argued that he did not want his children to watch any TV or films during the flight with budget Israeli airline UP. Despite his verbal protest, flight attendants were unable to adhere to the man's request and they issued eye masks instead.

I would have kicked him off the flight.
Tell the kids not to look, or carry your own eye-masks.
This is a case of imposing your religious beliefs on everyone else.
They needed duct tape and a towel.
We have ultra religious people too.
But they’re called Amish or plain people and don’t fly on airplanes.
One cannot be modern and primitive at the same time.
So drop the drama queen act.
Oh - and take a shower.
They should have just told him: “This is how it is. If you don’t like our airline, then don’t fly with us”.
So don’t use that airline. Idiot.
He just needs to get blindfolds for himself and his family, which is what the flight crew eventually provided (”eye masks”).
Next time he’ll bring his own and not make a fuss.
Eye masks were what came to my mind after reading the first sentence of this article. The passenger should have thought to bring them himself, and not imposed on the airline.
Not religious. It was merely a preference.
A religious belief is personal, not corporate. If you prefer to not watch TV because of your personal beliefs, then don’t watch it.
We had a student tell a teacher that he had to pray during school because he was a Muslim. She responded that it was a “choice”, not a “have to” because none of the other Muslim kids were praying.
ULTRA-Orthodox?
There are levels of Orthodoxy?
Give us a break.
Tyranny by another conceited minority showing off.
Exactly. Much easier than eyecovering!
Also, cannot these dumb TVs be turned off? Lord knows I’d hate having that noise and video screaming at me from every direction.
I hate all the TVs now in all the fast food joints and doctor offices. Especially with all the low-class sex stuff going on, wile we have children in the place.
Me too.
“But theyre called Amish or plain people and dont fly on airplanes.”
Amish do fly on airplanes.
.
And levels of jerkdom.
He’s a putz who clearly lived among muslims too long.
The proper solution is:
1. Tell your kids not to look.
2. Eyemasks
3. A piece of paper with some scotch tape on the kids’ monitors.
It is a basic tenant of Judaism to not make an ass out of yourself or seek to impose the tenants of Judaism on others. He’s failed in the basics.
The last time we flew was back from France. The air conditioning was leaking on the people across the aisle from us. The stewards had no solution but said it happened sometimes and would stop in a half hour or so. Meanwhile they were getting wet. So Mr. Mercat reached into his carryon bag and brought out “tada” duct tape and they taped a few towels up there. It stopped the dripping. We go free champagne. Yay.
We did have little TV screens but they could be turned off. Also there were lots of choices including classical music and very boring science shows. LOL
The issue here is that he must have been asking for all the TVs to be retracted. The kids could easily watch the ones in front of them, or one aisle over. So, if my guess as to what he was asking is correct, he was imposing his desired behavior on adjacent passengers.
Because their Scriptures forbid watching TV. Right.
