Pot is ruining Denver’s restaurant industry

The population of Denver has been steadily growing over the past few years, but not enough of its new inhabitants want to work in the restaurant industry.

The reason? The higher-paying jobs are in weed, man.

New eateries are popping up all over Denver to meet the increased demand of residents and tourists, but restaurant owners claim they’re having a hard time filling their kitchens with able-bodied workers, Bloomberg reports.

“Our work force is being drained by the pot industry,” Denver restaurateur Bryan Dayton told the site.

“Enter the weed business, which pays $22 an hour with full benefits,” added Dayton. “You can come work in a kitchen for (me) for eight hours a day, in a hot kitchen. It’s a stressful life. Or you can go sort weed in a climate-controlled greenhouse. It’s a pretty obvious choice.”

So why don’t restaurant owners just pay a little more? Quite simply, the marijuana industry can generally afford to pay workers at various levels much higher wages, they argue.

Banning tobacco use in bars has pretty much killed the local tavern industry.

Yeah, I always thought banning tobacco in bars was crazy. Banning it in casinos is off the chart crazy.

So...higher paying jobs are available, so people prefer to take them.

In other words the free market is working.

...mostly black market. Crime sky rocketed, too. Lots of shady types moved in to grow it.

No LE presence out in the rural areas, I live in one, so I see it. It’s not a pretty sight.

My good FRiend, your story should be a sound-bite ad for every state considering legalization.

Hoping you stay safe.

You're off the reservation there. Indian casinos smoke like a freight train.

I don’t know who the under hills are. I live in Denver and most of the restaurant workers speak Spanish as well as English. Every once in a while, in the suburbs, the restaurant workers speak English as the primary language. It is amazing in an Italian upscale restaurant that the kitchen people are Mexican. Why did not I get a job in a pot shop?! I do not now smoke. I would have been a steady worker. From Athens, Ga. Would have fit in. Oh Well. Delivery driver, courier works as well. Here is your envelope lady. How’s about a signiture?! Something in the English Language alphabet please?!

Vegas is turning no smoke.

Smoking and drinking and gambling just go together, IMO.

I live really close to the Indian casino. I don't smoke and I don't gamble (can't afford to). I have the occasional glass of wine or natural organic probiotic beer though.

What county? I find it hard to believe that legal weed changed things very much.

It cannot be just the restaurant industry.

One suspects that Denver's labor pool is...ummm... ...wasted, pretty much anyhoo, and not much interested in that ... ummm... ...work thingy...

CO is tied for 4th lowest unemployment rate among the states, according to the BLS.

Hot a fast food joint? Hmmm.

And I didn't know people who indulge or party don't go to restaurants.

“America hasn’t bought into marijuana prohibition so it is a dead-letter no-matter-what.” ?

Warning. Drug use may cause memory loss or even memory loss.

The punishment for the bad action of using pot is to continue using pot and think its great.
