People who lose their sense of smell in middle or older age risk dying early, a new study suggests.
Although previous research has shown a link between Alzheimers disease and a diminished sense of smell, it is the first time is has been shown to impact the chance of death for everyone.
Scientists from Stockholm University followed 1,774 Swedes aged between 40 and 90 for 10 years. At the beginning of the study they were asked to take a test to identify 13 different odours.
Researchers found that their chance of death was linked to how well they scored on the test. Each wrong answer increased their risk of dying over the study period by eight per cent.

Dumb....
My Dad lost his sense of smell and taste about 20 years ago after a sinus infection.
He’s now 92.
Yeah, but my life line is long.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the chance of death for everyone is 100%.
I lost my sense of smell decades ago, I broke my nose, smashed more like it, 4 times by the time I was 20. My right nostril is all but useless, and unless it is a very strong smell - like say Hillarys urine and feces soaked diapers - I can’t smell anything.
13 different odors tested.
Unable to detect each one increased risk of death by 8 percent. 8x13 is 104%.
So if one could not detect all the odors one would be already dead?
How about hair loss!!! Seriously, what are my chances??? :O)
My Uncle Bob didn’t smell so good, but that’s because he was already dead.

LOL. My dad lost his after using that Zycam crap when he had a bad cold about 15-18 years ago. He’s 89 now.
Really? There isn’t enough bad stuff going on this week, you need to tell us about yet another thing to worry about?
That stinks! (At least for those of us that can still smell.)
This doesn’t pass the smell test.
I have a dog with no nose. Know how he smells?
Awful!
I lost my sense of smell in 2002 after a particularly bad cold. Then it came back to some degree, but I would have phantom smells and odors were very off or muted. It took quite a long time, but it finally came back. I’m sure it’s no where near what it once was, but I’m just happy that it eventually rejuvenated. I put a lot of salt and pepper on my food to have more taste to it.
I’m not buying this. Correlation is not causation. I would need far more evidence than this. Far more.
You win!
I used to have a horrible sense of smell. Then 9 years ago I almost died. Went through 2 years of hell before I got better and the doc’s finally fixed me. Ever since then, my smeller is almost too sensitive. I can barely stand to talk to people up close, because I can smell their breath from 5 feet away. Even if it is not bad, it still has an odor and I know it is their breath.
Being on a plane is horrible and I fly quite frequently. You would be surprised at how many people fart on planes thinking they will get away with it.
Zycam did mine in as well.
First off, I’m very sorry that you had such an ordeal with your health for so long.
How interesting, though, about your sense of smell. You have a bionic, super-enhanced sniffer. I can see that being a curse.
Do you have any idea why that might have happened because of the illness? Did you run it by the doctors?
The brain is a very odd thing with what it can do and can’t do.
