Last year, two scientific papers claimed to have solved the Tully mystery. According to the two studies, the Tully Monster was definitively a vertebrate
But the last thing that the Tully Monster could be is a fish.
"Initially it was published as a worm,"
So the problem is, if it does have cup eyes, then it can't be a vertebrate

Tully Monster, the Illinois state fossil!
Obama, didn't care enough for his home state to sprinkle a few million in research grants, for dear old Tully?
"It has these eyes that are on stalks and it has this pincer at the end of a long proboscis and there's even disagreement about which way is up."
Go Tullimonstrum!!!!

A paddle fish. Native to the lower Mississippi basin and the Yang Tse river in China, nowhere else.

"This animal doesn't fit easy classification because it's so weird," Lauren Sallan, an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania Gotta love that precise, scientific language.

"It has these eyes that are on stalks and it has this pincer at the end of a long proboscis and there's even disagreement about which way is up."The artists rendering they used looks exactly like a fish and doesn't match this description at all. Perhaps they should have just shown the fossil.
