At the Hay-Adams this fall, members of Washingtons diplomatic community gathered inside the historic hotels glass-walled loft, with its postcard views of the White House, for a conversation about fashion. About clothes and their place on the world stage. The program, hosted by the State Department and Elle magazine, included a panel discussion, in which I was invited to participate, that featured designer Derek Lam. When the conversation came around to first lady Michelle Obama because how could it not? Lam dropped his head in a mournful manner and lamented: Her departure from the East Wing signaled the end of a singular era for American fashion.
During her tenure, Obama brought widespread attention to Seventh Avenue. She energized designers, editors and stylists with her fashion-forward wardrobe choices. She made industry insiders stand taller both at home and abroad. Shes been an exemplar of modern, fit and confident middle age. She instilled pride and kinship among countless black women.
And she has been the most high-profile cheerleader for the sleeveless sheath as the 21st-century power uniform. Its been accepted everywhere, says designer Maria Pinto, who created many of Obamas 2008 campaign dresses, including the purple sheath she wore when she fist-bumped the presumptive Democratic nominee. You dont have to be in a suit. Theres other ways to get that power look.
Lam is among the many Seventh Avenue designers whose clothes have been part of the first ladys public wardrobe and whose life story has been fundamental to her version of fashion diplomacy.

Even Stevie can see it!
She really is graceless and takes some horrid pictures. Go to the article and skim down to the pic of her in the green/blue dress. Wth is up with her hand?!?! Hahahaha
No! The pics where you can see “Michael’s” weenie flopping around are the best!
Sleeveless dresses in the winter are the height of ridiculous. I am already seeing TV newsreaders beginning to break with this Michelle prompted trend.
Did you see post 15 ? what did i miss?
Robin Givhan is the same WaPo writer who mocked the beautiful little children of Justice Roberts as looking like Easter eggs at his swearing in. They were very appropriately dressed.
Thank you for posting this in chat. Only better thing would have been to not post it at all :)
You're being very kind.
Absolute gag! She’s a total embarrassment and as a woman who appreciates exquisite style I can give my two cents. I wouldn’t be caught going to my mailbox in clothes that she wears. Can’t wait until she’s gone!
Someone here said that Michelle dressed like she killed a sofa and made a dress out of its skin.
Best quote yet!
Michelle? Don’t you mean Michael?
“The program, hosted by the State Department and Elle magazine...”
Your tax dollars at work. Buncha frooty-toots gathering to fawn over Michelle Obama’s tasteless “style.”
Fashion icon—NOT.
I don’t fault the woman for having a lumpy, hard to dress body. She can’t help that. But there’s a way to dress which minimizes flaws and is classy and elegant.
It starts with choosing professional haberdashers who know what they’re doing, not these amateurs whose designs look like a teenage seamstress’s first attempt at sewing-—poorly constructed, in garish, unflattering fabrics, with boob belts!
And the undergarments obviously aren’t quality, either. That’s why her lumpyness spills through the thin fabrics of her outer wear.
Between muffin-top, armpit biscuits, boob belts and crotch bulge, the woman is a mess.
Traditionally, American women look to the First Lady to promote designers. No way would I buy clothes from any of Mrs. O’s favorites. They’re awful!
Geez! I jumped. Warn people before posting that, that, whatever that thing is.
WTF. Barf alert for pictures and article. Too soon after dinner.
My friend and I work at a fine dining restaurant-we often overhear bits of conversations from customers. She is the bartender and one night came into the kitchen just steamed. There were three pro Hillary women at the bar (before the election) and my friend was ready to climb over the bar and set them straight.
I told her I could tell they were liberal just by their looks. Being angry, godless, and irrational tends to make one age badly. Rarely do people surprise me when I find out their political stance; it’s apparent in their countenance.
