The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread.
Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Wife is making another monster pepper/tomato casserole with peppers picked yesterday. We might have escaped the freeze since it looks like our overnight low was 34. The big lake in our front yard is still in the 60s and steaming each morning.
We have the same conditions here water wise...will you get enough snow for tracking the deer? our population here is great....
That sounds like the ideal holiday setting, with steam coming off the lake , serene and peaceful.
I hope you have a happy and warm Thanksgiving with family and friends and share your serenity.
With the greying of the population, and the growing number of "couch potatoes", there are fewer hunters pursuing deer each year.
So yes , the herds and the size of deer is increasing; it seems that more and more deer are being hit on the roadways than hunters are harvesting.
In the current 56 degree weather there is no snow for tracking,..yet ! The front is still about 2 hours away.
Generally, the first snow is slopp, slush, and very wet, and causes idiot drivers to spin out and is the cause of multiple automobile accidents.
However, the cold snap should last 2-3 days with enough snow to allow tracking into the end of the week.
My son is out now, so I expect a call soon for the dehydrator for making jerkey.
Last year, no call. It figures since we had just gotten the 'Excaliber' .. Lol !

I tried to act excited. He did this every year...
You got it!
I’ve was in Ag/Hort. for over 20 years. Wish I could say I miss it, but I sure did ENJOY this past FIRST SPRING in 15 years not being tied to the Insane Asylum (Garden Center), LOL!
I’ve worked for The Seed Savers Exchange and Jung Garden Centers. Shameless Plug:

See post #45, errantly sent to Eric
Just got word to break out the 'Excaliber' as my son's girlfriend just bagged a large doe, then she had to go to work.
He is remaining out in the woods, trying to maintain his male dignity in the rain an driving wind; while they are not competitive with each other ,..still ..
Ouch······”Listen babe, I was out early, bagged a doe but have to run off to work. Since you’re not busy could you be a dear...?”
;>)
If you want to see insanity, try working at a commercial greenhouse, wholesaler, who also runs a Florist shop
around Christmas and Mothers Day, ..especially mothers Day !
Two weeks of prepping supplies, and scheduling delivery of thousands of plants and flowers, all within 2- 3 days,
at the same time trying to run a wholesale business.
But yes, a gardening center can get hectic, but a florist shop goes 'rat-sh!t crazy', with a time and delivery deadline.
Blessings to you with fireplace , a good book, crocheting, a warm dog, and Netflicks ! Lol ! Prayers up for Beau and a safe trip home.
Already done - gutted, and skinned..hanging now.
The girlfriend works at emergency Call dispatch center, and with the cold, and snow, and high winds during the first snowstorm, he knows that she will be busy, if not swamped.
True love is giving more to the relationship than you take from it.
This son is a municipal fireman and EMT, so he knew what he was getting into; and he has already asked for the 'excaliber'.. and he is still out there (for dignity, if not pride).
Realized that bond, just couldn’t resist the potential humor in the situate having been in a similar situation once with my ex. which had us both Lol.
No offensive was intended.
Nor was offense taken ! Actually, the situation is quite humorous since this was her first deer, and her first year hunting.
Sorta a victim of circumstance,.. sorta. Now he is freezing his butt off in wind, rain, and snow.
Ah ! The cost of true love shouldn't be frostbite ! Lol !!

Oh, yes. I did my time in a Floral Shop, too!
You know who has really long-lasting flowers? Friggin’ Walmart! I buy a bouquet of either small Carnations or Chrysanthemums and get 2 weeks out of them for $4.78! (Change the water daily and clip off any foliage below the water line.)
Totally amazing to me. Their roses last a good 10 days, too. 6 for $4.78.
Yeah, I know. EVERYONE is supposed to hate Walmart, but they’re all I have out here in the sticks, LOL!
No criticism here !
As they say :" If it works for ya ,.. don't try to fix it !"
Could I get on the ping list? Just started using my FR login again after a long hiatus, during which I started stumbling my way through vegetable gardening.
I spent the afternoon harvesting lamb’s quarter seeds (pick the seeds, roast the seeds, hull the seeds, winnow the seeds, accidentally blow a metric buttload of chaff onto the dog) and am trying to decide if I should dig up compost or just break down and buy some. Big garden, small compost pile, Too Much To Do.
The past few days have been extremely windy, with temps bouncing all over the place, here in Central Missouri.
Mrs. Augie picked a bushel of Blue Lake green beans yesterday. We’ll make a big pot of them for Thanksgiving dinner and can whatever is left.
I have one strip of weed mat left to pull up in the tomato patch. I’m going to get that done after I get in from deer hunting in the morning. Then it will be time to spread some fertilizer and lime, and run over it with the moldboard plow.
Quite windy here at LOZ.
Good freeze tonight.
We picked everything still in the pepper patch and made another massive tomato/pepper casserole.
These peppers will not be wasted.
Getting ready for cold weather to set in so everything is covered up. Having a great crop of arugula and the pansies are blooming profusely. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
