Russia has unveiled chilling pictures of its largest ever nuclear missile, capable of destroying an area the size of France.

The RS-28 Sarmat missile, dubbed Satan 2 by Nato, has a top speed of 4.3 miles (7km) per second and has been designed to outfox anti-missile shield systems.

The new Sarmat missile could deliver warheads of 40 megatons - 2,000 times as powerful as the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly planning to replace the country's older SS-18 Satan weapons with the new missiles.

Artist conceptions are one thing. Actual working missiles are another. The Russians have been working on the Bulava submarine launched ballistic missile for over 20 years and the failure rate is still over 50% of tests.

A 40 MT blast will not wipe out France.

Indeed. This level of reporter hyperbole and ignorance is typical. These are the very idiots we rely on for reporting on the campaign.

If he’s talking about a missile with 16 40MT warheads, it could pretty much do in France.

Exactly. 40 megatons will destroy a good 200+ kilometer radius and reduce a bit more to rubble. You’d need something like probably 500-1000 megatons or more to destroy France. It is possible, but not achievable unless air dropped by a very big aircraft, and that’s not going to happen any time soon.

It’s things like this that show the great strides Obama, Hillary, and Kerry have made to make the world a safer place.

Just out of curiosity, I went over to nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap. It’s a webpage where you can enter a location and yield for a nuclear detonation and see how far the approximate effects would go. I entered in a 40 MT airburst over Paris.
Yes, one bomb that big would definitely ‘do’ Paris, and the thermal radiation pulse at detonation would cause 3rd degree burns for about 40 miles in all directions. It wouldn’t destroy France, but it sure would decimate a good-sized chunk around Paris.

A lot of the computation of the area of destruction depends upon the altitude of the detonation. If you air-burst the 16, 40 megaton warheads in a pattern aimed at population centers in a country the size of France, that country ceases to exist as a functional entity for years. Take the 16 largest metropolitan areas in France and by the time you get to #16 you are looking for targets.

Vladimir Putin is making his point, just like his Soviet predecessors. It matters not how weak his economy may be, he may be just crazy enough to pull the trigger.

Obama's intentionally weak foreign policy (Hillary) has demonstrated what happens when you make a vacuum, and here we see Russia, China, ISIS and Taliban filling it. Now we are, I hate to say it, looking at Hillary for 4 more years of changing America and ignoring, as much as possible, everywhere else. Joy!

We were terrified of the Soviet ICBM’s until we went to dismantle them. They were inoperable.

Something does not add up in this report, which is no surprise coming from today’s media. A Trident II, which is one of the more modern MIRVd missiles, carries 8 to 12 W88 fusion bombs; each with a yield of 475 KT. The W88 is the most advanced weapon we have.

It would seem highly improbable you could create a MIRVd weapon with a yield of 40MT unless there was a break thru on the design of the weapon; such as a theoretical matter/antimatter bomb.

My belief:
A completely decisive first strike is the only answer to this kind of weapons development. Vlad Putin is a Russian devil.

One missile could probably take out NYC, DC and Boston. Another SF and LA. Game over for the USA

Game over for the Democrats, not the USA. Democrats overwhelmingly live in high population density nuclear target zones.

It’s not targeted at France. More like NYC, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Denver, LA, San Diego, San Fran...

I also do not believe that missile can fly at 15,480 MPH. Then, it is impossible for missiles to put satellites in orbit, and all those things that pass over my house must just be angels. Low-Earth orbit requires 18,000 MPH.
