Russia has unveiled chilling pictures of its largest ever nuclear missile, capable of destroying an area the size of France.

The RS-28 Sarmat missile, dubbed Satan 2 by Nato, has a top speed of 4.3 miles (7km) per second and has been designed to outfox anti-missile shield systems.

The new Sarmat missile could deliver warheads of 40 megatons - 2,000 times as powerful as the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly planning to replace the country's older SS-18 Satan weapons with the new missiles.

Orbital velocity is 17,500 mph. Since a missile goes on a sub-orbital track, it gets pretty fast at the end of it's boost phase, but doesn't get to orbital velocity. Not only that, it wouldn't be the whole missile, but just the warhead and maybe the final boost stage that would be going that fast.

15.4 K mph is fairly plausible.

Russia is gearing up to test-fire a nuclear weapon which supposedly is powerful enough to wipe out entire countries in a single massive strike. The “Satan 2” is rumored to be the most powerful nuclear design ever. It is believed to be equipped with new stealth technology to make it invisible to enemy radar systems.

Multi-stage thermonuclear weapons were created in the 1940s. This is nothing. There is no practical limit to the size of a thermonuclear explosion, limited only by the size of the device.
