Does anyone here have any experience with selling on Ebay? I just put an ad to sell an iPhone yesterday. I've received several requests to buy it right away and asked for my paypal account.
Some have offered to pay even $150 more than my asking price. I've looked at many of these requests, and most of their accounts were created yesterday, so that makes me very wary of selling something to these guys.
Is anyone familiar with ebay scams? I mean, is it common for someone to get their payment returned from Paypal some how after the item has shipped?
Don’t. It’s against T&C. Just let the auction run and ignore the emails. IMO. And i do sell on ebay occasionally.
Only sell to someone who pays you first or has a great reputation.
Fear new buyer and even more so new sellers.
what he said.
electronics draws the biggest scammers.
if it’s an auction, let it run it’s course.
I agree with Post #2.
But don’t worry about when a user joined Ebay - if the money comes in through PayPal and is good, then you’re fine. They can’t take the money back, and they can’t reach into your account in any way (otherwise, PayPal, Ebay, Amazon and a host of other large companies would be out of business).
They all seem to need it immediately because they want to buy one for their nephew or son or someone.
You can list your item with stipulation that the buyer must have more than 10 pos. feedbacks. Selling to anyone with zero to a few pos feedback or out of the USA is asking for trouble. Then again, as a seller, you simply don’t release the product until you have the money.
I sold a car through them about 8 years back and a few other nick-necks here and there. If you ship make sure that you have proof of receipt signed for to show proof of delivery. eBay made a number of changes a few years back that made it easier for buyers to get their moneys refunded with little to no proof of a failure to receive...it’s caused some sellers a fair amount of grief.
That being said Paypal is still the easiest way. Wouldn’t sell to a buyer without ratings so check to see if they have had problems in the past - if little to no history or newly created accounts then I’d probably not sell unless it is for a limited value (for me under $50). Just my opinion on this. Also make sure you wipe the phone by reinitializing it completely after deleting everything from it.
I sell on ebay. Customers do not need any info about your pay pal account. Sounds like a scam. It happens on Craigs list too. Do not give out any information.
You can write me privately if you would like.
Against eBay rules and 99.99% of the time you’ll be screwed.
There is a way in Ebay to list a Buy It Now price on an item that is also under auction, and if someone clicks that button to pay the Buy It Now price it garners the item at that time. I have no idea if Ebay will allow an auction to be revised like that, or ended early and re-launched with a Buy It Now price.
The victims usually deposit the check. The buyer then directs the victims to pay over the extra cash to the company that picks up the item. The victim sees that the cash is in their account and thinks everything is okay and sends the cash. Later the victim will have their bank reverse the deposit and probably be contacted for presenting a fraudulent check.
I contacting the poor guy whose account was getting drawn on and he said that there were over 35 checks in the $1800 range presented for payment to his account in a matter of three days. Needless to say he said it was a nightmare.
I think the advice is to deal with locals only.
The above thread is a scam on Craigs list, not ebay.
Correct on BIN option. and an auction can be modified if there are no bids, IIRC.
oh yeah... dumb of me...obviously selling in ways other than Ebay would be against the terms. Here’s one inquiry:
“Hello Seller, am interested in purchasing your eBay item for my son who is doing his birthday in a few weeks from now as a gift from his Dad and due to the quick need of the item, am ready to add $100 to your asking price and pay $150 for shipping. I will appreciate it if you can sell this item to me by sending me your PayPal e-mail and item Number to me via (814) 651-xxxx and i will deposit the fund into your account immediately. Please don’t mail me through eBay, text only because am off to work. Hope to read from you soon.”

It seemed too good to be true. Glad I asked here.
A friend of mine sold a computer mother board. He was paid but then the seller claimed that all he received in the mail was a piece of wood in the box.
Ebay made my friend refund the money, and he was out a mother board.
Oddball proposals should be reported to Ebay as a matter of being ethical.
Always check with eBay and Paypal to make sure the payment is processed and cleared and always ship to the confirmed address so that you can have seller protection.
I would also recommend no international shipping on electronics and.. sorry to say.. you should be prepared to be scammed regardless. A new seller with an iphone draws out all the worst dregs on eBay.
Best of luck :)
I sell almost exclusively on craigslist and amazon.
I only sell locally for craigslist, so when i get a broken english, out of area text responding to my craigslist ad, I reply with “local inquiries only, please”
Don’t sell using PayPal account. .
I read about scam of people using PayPal but not paying in the end.
