New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

True. The household residents are eating there way through two large pans of ground beef and noodle casserole, with few mixed vegetables but more peas, because of the mysterious disappearance of half a bag of mixed vegetables.

These will be the 5th set of residents in that house. The first were okay until they got Rottweilers, which barked and attacked the fence. Later there were some redneck screaming people. The other two sets were inoffensive.

2,400 is a big number. If someone wanted to give me that many dollars, I wouldn’t object!

I’ll have to take the Up North people some muffins or a cake in the next few days.

I always find myself holding the breath when a new set of victims...neighbours move in next door. Sometimes they take while to train on Car Parking protocol.

Car parking here is a bit of a challenge. The redneck reality show people across the street have had five or six vehicles around recently, and we have four.

Are you sure they where there in the first place?

Well, no. I'm sure I put them in the cart at Walmart, and I'm pretty sure I paid for them, but I'm not positive they made it to the van. It's also possible they're still in the van; that happened to a large jug of disinfectant hand soap a while back. The soap was okay after weeks, but the vegetables are a loss if they're still there.

They brought a snow shovel!

And when do you predict their next chance to use it will be, what with glowbull warmthing and all?

"They brought a snow shovel!"

Snow shovels are half of the perfect tool for picking up autumn leaves.

With a snow shovel in one hand and a rake in the other, piles of leaves disappear under the assault of giant salad tongs.

Of course, you have to have a place to put the leaves. I use a pickup truck.
