Trump's VEEP Should Not Be a Sitting Senator
Personal Opinion ^ | July 6, 2016 | Xzins

Posted on 07/06/2016 7:51:10 AM PDT by xzins

It goes without saying that Senator Jeff Sessions is popular with a huge number of Americans. It is also true that Joni Ernst, a war veteran, is a rising star in Republican ranks. Either would make wonderful Vice Presidents for different reasons.

However, the trade-off is unacceptable. In the case of Ernst, she is sitting as senator in Iowa, at best a purple state. There is absolutely no guarantee that her seat would be won by a Republican.

Why is that so crucial? The Republican majority in the Senate is only 4 senators. And this year the Republicans have 24 senator seats up for grabs while the Democrats have only 10. Why make that 25 and in a state where holding the seat is unlikely?

The same argument can be applied to Tennessee's Bob Corker to some degree. It applies less so to Jeff Sessions. Alabama would likely elect a conservative.

However, both Sessions and Corker are senior senators. Each would be in line to chair powerful committees in the next congress. In the case of Sessions, the most America-first senator now sitting, a President Trump would want his expertise in charge of a recalcitrant group of establishmentarian republicans who yearn to open our borders to floods of cheap labor regardless of terroristic threats. It is even possible that a Senator Sessions could become Senate Majority Leader. That is a far more important position than VP in the day to day running of the U.S. government.

So, Donald Trump should be encouraged to steer clear of any senatorial running mate in this 2016 election. The price is too steep. Lose the Senate, and everything will grind to a standstill.

There will be zero hope of appointing a conservative replacement for Justice Scalia, of controlling illegal immigration, of fixing our military, or of changing our trade pacts. Losing the Senate will put everything on the back burner.

That would be another finger in the eye of the media and establishment that I would love, but I don’t see it happening.

Historically speaking; persons whose only political experience is in the Senate, make spectacularly bad Presidents.

Obama, Kennedy, LBJ, & Harding; the majority of their pre-presidential political experience was as a Senator. Former Senators Andrew Johnson and James Buchanon weren't so hot either.

I really like Blackburn. She is a fighter in the tradition of Sarah Palin.

Don’t some states have off year elections in which they will elect an interim senator even after the governor makes a temporary pick?

That would be way too awesome.

But yes, Sarah in Denver knocked it out of the park!

Great Pic too!

McCain — senator, lost.

Dole — senator, lost.

Barry Goldwater — senator, lost

Republicans don’t have good luck with senatorial presidential candidates, but we’re talking about VEEP.

As with almost everyone on this forum I value Sarah and what she stands for. But I can't stand to listen to her speak.

When she gives one of her screechy speeches I run to hide under my bed like my late cockapoo doggie used to do every Fourth of July.

You are correct sir! So here is the best the GOP has produced from the Senate in the last 100 years.

I like the idea of a FORMER Senator and Pence might be the guy. We need to remember, the VP has about as much power as a junior, a very junior Senator. One vote only in case of a tie. Other than that he/she is a good go between for the President and Congress and he/she needs to look good at funerals.
I may not agree with Pence much or any, but I doubt he would. like LBJ conspire to kill the top guy in order to get the keys to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

I still hope it’s Santorum, whom no one is considering.

Excellent link. Thank you.

the appointee serves until the next regularly-scheduled, statewide general election.

I wonder if that is any state-wide office?

We don’t hear his name a lot. I like Santorum.

He wouldn’t hurt in Pennsylvania.

On her worst day she can’t come close to the screeching of Hillary Clinton.

Guys like Gingrich are too fat and old. Christie is fat and a Rino. So they all have faults.

I agree that all public figures have faults, but I don't run to hide under the bed covering my ears when Newt and Chris make speeches.

Christie makes a win in New Jersey much more likely.

Isn't Christie pushing through a 23 cent a gallon increase in gasoline taxes? I doubt that will help him help Trump carry New Jersey.

That, and since being elected to Congress, she hasn’t done a damned thing.
