forgive the lack of capitalization. i am back in front of a computer for the first time since friday, june 17th, and only typing with one hand.

i was coming home from work on friday when i hit a single bar lane barrier that should not have been down. it knocked me off my bike at about 50mph and i rolled some distance on the pavement.

my request is for my wife--she must take care of me and is ill-prepared for it.

pray she gets the strength to do so.

Hi ShadowAce,

Geez, man, that sounds pretty terrible, and as I wrote shortly ago on mail, you and your wife are in my prayers. Let me share a personal story.

In 1991 I'd been riding a couple of years and made a stupid error (due to not keeping focused on riding) that caused me to go flying way up and over the handlebars at about 45 MPH and tumbling into the oncoming lane (no, thank God I was not flattened). But when I landed I had my right arm ahead of me -- I straight-armed into the pavement.

The radius was shattered -- the cup that the wrist rotates in was in about two dozen pieces and lots of dust, and there was damage to the wrist bones and up the arm, but the radius was the worst. Did I mention I'm right-handed?

I was in an external "Hoffman" fixator for 10 weeks holding things steady at an angle. It looked rather like a cross between punk body-mod hardware and a short-wave directional antenna.

Through the Grace of God and a really talented ortho surgeon, I regained the use of my right wrist over the next year or so, and 25 years later, all that remains as reminders are a couple of the fractured pieces that knit back together unevenly, and so the back of my wrist has an extra bump or two. But it works.

Have faith in your doctors, and in God, to give you a chance at full recovery. Yeah, it'll take a while.

I'm not at all making light of the severity of your injuries -- just saying, shoot for the best and be willing to accept whatever the Lord grants you. That worked for me, and I pray that you are blessed with the same good fortune as I was.
