It wasn't quite the Red Wedding, but Thursday brought viewers news of more than a dozen prime-time shows being axed to make room for new programs next season.
ABC took the sword to seven series (including country music drama "Nashville" and veteran whodunit "Castle") while Fox is sacrificing five freshman shows, including comedies starring aging pretty boys Rob Lowe and John Stamos.
Meanwhile, CBS is deleting "CSI: Cyber" after this, its sophomore season, thus laying to rest the "CSI" dynasty that encompassed four series during a 16-year span.
The official body count as well as new programming blood for the 2016-2017 season will be rolled out next week at the networks' "upfront" sessions for advertisers.
But through a combination of network leaks and networks jumping the gun, a flood of announcements got early exposure Thursday.

I would not know about most of this, since I prefer mostly British police procedural programming, on streaming sources; namely Netflix, Amazon, PBS, Acorn TV.
Taken together they provide me with far more than I have time or endurance to watch, without looking at the US network offerings.
Exceptions to above rule include House of Cards (remake of British serial), and a couple of others.
Oh, man.
Mrs. F enjoyed that "Nashville" show, which featured some gay dude character.
I was exposed to the show by hearing it from across the room. What dreck.
Main premise of the show was that we're supposed to care about the personal trials & tribulations of crappy "New Country" music stars.
Hey, it's their world, the rest of us just live in it.
In last week's episode that was a particularly artless Conservative Bad Gal TV Show host "straw man" who had the temerity to condemn the gay guy's lifestyle.
I sure won't miss it.
Kryptonite ear rings
Time to bring back Firefly!
Galavant had gay pedophile in just part of the one episode I saw.
Good riddance to trash.
I only watch ION, INSP, MeTV, UP, & Antenna TV. All the old shows.
It was explained in the comics, long ago.
A piece of metal from Krypton, along with anything else, becomes ‘super’ as well, so it can be used to pierce a super person’s ears..................
re: Castle
Writers don’t have much imagination. How many times for how many seasons can they have Becket and Castle being kidnapped?
Of course, the same can be said for the TNT Rizzoli & Isles.
Surprisingly, I enjoy iZombie, although I'm guessing I'm not going to like next season.
The first several seasons of Castle were really good and I looked forward to them.
re: Hell on Wheels.
Yeah, AMC sort of did a dirty with it. They only had about 10-12 episodes per year. Since they decided to end it, they only ran 7 episodes last year so they could get another year out of it and have the final 6 (I think that is the correct number) episodes run this summer.
I don’t understand why these cable networks have such short seasons of 6 to 12 episodes and then wait a year for the next group of 6 to 12 episodes.
Agent Carter was a big favorite here too. When someone decides to spend money and get good people, something really good like Agent Carter happens.
I like Hayley too but not a super big fan.
Chuck was a slow starter with me but I really grew to love it.
The pop culture references were a big selling point. Casey being a big RR fan helped.
I’ve discovered Minder from the late 70s through the 80s.
And forget about losing her virginity!
I’m so glad to hear Supernatural was renewed for season 12. Love that show.
I’d love to have seen Hogan wrap up with the Allies rolling in with tanks and during the surrender/turnover Klink, Burkhalter, Shultz, and Hochstedder are shown the complete setup.
A plus would be Kinch somehow being one of the liberators.
Brisco County was a great show that should have gotten a little longer run.
80s Sledge Hammer! is another that should have gotten more.
Crusade.
I hate that too, and how they have to have their winter breaks. By the time the next half of the season starts, or a new season begins, I've forgotten what happened, and have to check online to refresh my memory.
