Porsche unveiled a new V-8 engine at the 37th Vienna Motor Symposium that will eventually power the range-topping variants of the upcoming second-generation Panamera and the next Cayenne SUV. In addition to powering the larger vehicles in Porsches lineup, the new V-8 will also be used by other Volkswagen Group brands including Audi and Bentley.
Featuring two twin-scroll turbochargers, the new 4.0-liter V-8 is rated at 550 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque (up from 520 hp and 516 lb-ft), which puts it just shy of the current 4.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 utilized in the 570-hp Porsche Panamera Turbo S. Despite its power, the new engine will also have lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy thanks to a cylinder deactivation feature that will cut consumption by 30 percent, according to Wards Auto.

Hmmm. Audi already has a great 4.0L V8 twin turbo that also has cylinder deactivation. My 2013 Audi S6 uses it. In the RS7 they tune it up to 560 hp.

No kidding. So much is controlled by computer like steering and throttle and can have the mode controlled by the driver. The stability and traction control torque vectoring is impressive. Wonder how the electronic obsolescence will be handled.

I remember when a young guy would not want to be seen in a four door car. The ideal of a cool car was a Porsche 911. Now that the baby boomers have gotten fat I see them driving around in extra large four door Porsches.
Most of the ones around here are piloted by relatively good looking upscale soccer moms.
The fat guys are in Suburbans, Escalades, and king cab $60,000 pickups.
I used to have a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo. My 2013 Audi S6 is much faster and the handling does not try to kill you.
True, but it took a manly man to handle that turbo Carrera.
When I went to the Bondurant School they had a non turbo 911 as one of their training cars.
It was really interesting learning the feel of “lift throttle oversteer”
A lot changes in 27 years of improvements. Sports cars are not historically known for being smooth quiet rides. Kinda defeats what a sports car is.
With mine you had to have the throttle right going into a corner. You did not dare lift or it would swap ends.
This was similar.
The school was at Ontario Speedway on the infield road course
There was a lot of safe runoff area, most of the infield was open.
And they used worn out hard tires so your corner speeds were pretty slow to start with.
Agree. Have an S7 with the same engine. Put new APR program in it and it makes the same power as the RS7. Audi way better than the other German makes.

They use the Audi RS7-tuned engine in some Bentley models already. The Audi 5.2L V10 Plus engine and dual clutch gearbox are also used in the Lamborghini Huracan. I have thought about getting the APR engine management tuning job done to my S6. APR dyno results show the S6/S7 engine is really 480hp instead of the Audi claimed 420hp. Sounds about right since C&D clocked the S6 at 0-60 in 3.7 seconds.
I really like the 570hp Cayenne.
I bet I would like a 570 hp Cayenne better than my dog hauler 1997 Toyota 4Runner. But that thing just won’t break!

I was just out tuning my 667 Camaro today. Had to replace an accelerator pump plunger. I doubt I could fix the Porche.
True.
But there’s a fast declining number of guys who can work on carburetors too.
I had a lot of problems on my 67 Camaro.
Two rebuilts were as problematic as the one I had.
Internet says today high percentage of rebuilt carbs are faulty out of the box.
I finally had to break down and go over one piece by piece and make it right
