No Self-Respecting Adult should Buy Comics or Watch Superhero Movies
The Telegraph ^ | March 28, 2016 | Rhymer Rigby

Another month, another superhero movie staggers to the silver screen, lurching under the weight of its own self-importance, groaning with the expectations of fans, and burdened with a nine-figure marketing budget. I am, of course, talking about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, to give it its full, clunkingly portentous title.

Can we all please grow up? Can we acknowledge that Marvel and DC have scraped right though the bottom of the barrel? Can we call time on superhero films? Films which are too dark for kids the comics were originally written for, yet too dumb for any thinking adult.

The artwork on the covers of the comics is phenomenal.

Yes, I loved Michael Keaton as Batman. I always thought he was an underrated actor. He finally got recognized for his talent in Birdman.

And technically, I think Adam West did a Batman movie a little before my time, but I saw it on TV. Kind of corny, but a worthy attempt.

But I meant of the modern Batman films, the first of the Dark Knight trilogy, “Batman Begins” was dark and moody, but it was pretty well done. The second worked mainly because of Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker. Very dark films, but they worked for me. The third, “The Dark Knight Rises”, was forgettable.

This new version of Batman with an edgier, less pure Superman, just does not interest me. Don’t care to see an emo Superman. Don’t like the idea that he shacks up with Lois Lane even if he intends to do the honorable thing eventually.

Feels like the boyhood argument in Stand By Me about who would win a fight between Mighty Mouse and Superman. The answer: Superman, of course, because Mighty Mouse is a cartoon, and Superman is a real person. Well, to me, this Superman is not the “real” Superman. He is what the corrupted minds of this evil generation consider noble. How about qualities like leadership, humility, chivalry, respect, gentleness, kindness, patience, honesty, and integrity?

I do like the old fashioned hero persona of Captain America. Seems like they want to chip away at his squeaky clean image as well, though.

Hollywood could do better.

“They quit making those when old Shintaro Katsu died, back in the 90s.”

There was Kitano’s in 2003:

I lived in Austin back during Adam West’s batman movie where the world premier was held. Reason held there was the Batboat was made by Glastron there.

Yes, it was corny but always G rated and morality abounded.

My family just remembered (we toasted the heroes of ‘16) the Easter Rebellion. I wonder if they had more distractions back then, like NASCAR, NFL, Netflix, comics, etc., would they have had the time to kill some Brits? Probably not. Even back then, a lot of good Irishmen fought for the British in WWI and WWII, nuts. I think it is hard to be free if you are stupid, and all of these diversions just make people stupid.

IFC actually had Zatoichi on early in the morning. Pre-commercial IFC. There was this one were he fought in a snow storm in village in the late 60’s I think that blew my mind after work and a few beers. Tremendous stuff.

While I never got the allure of comic books, I see it as a pretty harmless past time. Its no better or worse than watching sports or watching liberal approved drama movies. Its probably better than watching reality television or getting drunk.

I spend a lot of time and overtime working a job that can be exceedingly stressful where lives are sometimes on the line. I take care of my family and obligations. Who is the author of this article to say that I shouldn’t retreat into video games (my own hobby that they’d likely deem as childish) to relax?

How are adults reading comic books to relax any worse than some columnist being a busybody? As long as you’re not ignoring the world around you and ignoring your obligations, do whatever you want.

I’m a Scrooge McDuck man, myself. Carl Barks was the greatest cartoonist ever.

Me too. I own one of the 5000 signed, limited edition copies of "Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge McDuck, His Life and Times", by Carl Barks.

I am not all that into comic book based movies but I loved Guardians Of The Galaxy, both the movie which I saw in the theater and the soundtrack. I do not buy many movie DVD’s but I made an exception for GotG. : ),

When I first watched the movie, whether intentional or not, Ronan and the Kree seem a metaphor for ISIS and radical Islam:

I am really looking forward to the next Guardians Of The Galaxy movie. I understand that Kurt Russell has been cast as Quill's father. : )

And it doesn’t hurt that not only is Chris Pratt, in this woman’s opinion, “smoking hot”, he also seems like an all-around good guy, a good husband and father, patriotic, an avid hunter and a proud gun owner and not afraid to express his Christian faith.

I got that same impression about him personally, though...as a man, I was more enthused by his Indiana Jones-like “Devil may care” attitude!

That, and like Captain Kirk (which I am sure was no accident) helikes to date green women!

Outrageous.

I learned how to read from my older brother's comic books and for 6 years of elementary school I had to sit and behold the vast nbr. of my classmates struggle to grasp and master such eloquent prose regarding Dick, Jane, Sally, and Spot.

I spent most of ‘reading time’ in school trying to look out the window at cars driving by, for years. I was chastised more than a few times by my teachers for not paying attention or whatever.

The Comic Book movies have been great, especially the Spider Man 1st series. The more recent films have disappointed but I typically view them a year or so after their runs once they show up on cable.

Looking forward to the new Tarzan movie which has a promising preview, but it will be more than a year before I get to see that one.

Perhaps comic books these days have deteriorated, but the modern presentations of those old stories have for me been in some cases, a delight.

It made a very good point - that security built with good intentions can be hijacked and used for evil against liberty. Kinda like the Patriot Act and the subsequent metadata gathering. Lord knows what Obama and his minions are doing with it.
