Am taking a travel vacation to visit friends up and down the Eastern seaboard. Any tips on what to avoid and not to avoid? Haven't been down that way in years.

I concur and I live near Baltimore. Total cesspool.

Hit every revolutionary and civil war battlefield you can find. Almost every exit in northern virginia has one. DC is a must visit. Try to time your visit to the WWII Memorial with an Honor Flight. (Honorflight.org)

Philadelphia is pretty cool. I’d skip New Jersey. I spend time on the shore for work and stuff is still closed.

The Historic Triangle in southern Virginia includes Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg. Well worth a couple days.

Cancel Aberdeen. I live there. The museum was shut down 3 years ago. All the stuff sadly was moved south.

Next time you got to Dallas, I was going to invite you along on a stroll down Martin Luther King from Cesar Chavez to Malcolm X Boulevards. Only 8 blocks, and we could go past the Muhammad Mosque a block or so in, and end up at the Islamic Center of South Dallas.

Streets might be busy at rush hour, so after midnight on Saturday night might be best.

Depending on your Eastern you want to get, the Eastern shore of Maryland is beautiful. St Mary’s City is very interesting.

Locked containers aren’t required by law in Maryland. In a gun case or holster, in trunk and separate ammo. Ammo in a magazine is ok.

The Outer Banks of NC are the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast (IMO). But they’re kind of isolated...

The song from the 1960s says it best:

Actually, Georgia tends to be easy going on the interstates as far as a little speeding goes. Watch out for the small towns. Mississippi is another story - I put it on cruise control under the speed limit while driving in the Magnolia state.

I spent some time in SE Georgia in the mid 90s.

Ludowici and nearby Jesup used to be totally corrupt, literally robbing travelers under color of law.

It is true that Lester Maddox threatened to give them a legal barb wire enema if they didn’t straighten out. Both towns are now just ordinary towns. No longer speed traps.

Sounds like a plan. I’ll wear my confederate flag do-rag.

They are apparently slipping back into old habits:

I once visited a friend in the Ludowici jail. It is smaller than the Mayberry jail and they used a large padlock to secure the bars.

My friend was around 6’6” and powerfully built. He had just got back from Desert Storm. They went to his house on a fight between him and his wife.

I would love to have seen them take him in as he resisted.

Avoid Philadelphia.

Made a cross-country trip in '93, New York City to Marin Co, California. Philadelphia was our second stop, on the way to D.C.
We took a random exit and made it just about a mile before making a U turn and continuing to D.C. why? Discretion was the better part of valor.

I don't suppose today, 23 years later it would inspire an improved atmosphere of safety; very unlikely

If you run into Eskimoes or penguins, you’re going the wrong way.

If you’re in PA, try eating scrapple. Just don’t ask what’s in it.

And don't forget to slosh it up with maple syrup!
