The New York Times is sitting on an audio recording that some of its staff believes could deal a serious blow to Donald Trump who, in an off-the-record meeting with the newspaper, called into question whether he would stand by his own immigration views.
Trump visited the papers Manhattan headquarters on Tuesday, Jan. 5, part of a round of editorial board meetings that as is traditional the Democratic candidates for president and some of the Republicans attended. The meetings, conducted partly on the record and partly off the record in a 13th floor conference room, give candidates a chance to make their pitch for the papers endorsement.
After a dispute over Trumps suggestion of tariffs on Chinese goods, the Times released a portion of the recording. But that was from the on-the-record part of the session.
n Saturday, columnist Gail Collins, one of the attendees at the meeting (which also included editor-in-chief Dean Baquet), floated a bit of speculation in her column:
The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesnt believe in positions, except the ones you adopt for strategic purposes when youre making a deal. So you obviously cant explain how youre going to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, because its going to be the first bid in some future monster negotiation session.
Sources familiar with the recording and transcript which have reached near-mythical status at the Times tell me that the second sentence is a bit more than speculation. It reflects, instead, something Trump said about the flexibility of his hard-line anti-immigration stance.
So what exactly did Trump say about immigration, about deportations, about the wall? Did he abandon a core promise of his campaign in a private conversation with liberal power brokers in New York?

OOOOooohhhhh.....gee, I wonder if Trump knows about this.....what he himself *may* have ‘secretively’ told the NYSlimes. Oh, noes.
“And if they have “likely mischaracterized” what he said, the best way to counter that is for Trump to authorize them to release the tape/transcript so his own words can speak for themselves.”
Correct. We don’t have time for games.
There is too much hype

Be careful what we read into a candidate.
Be very careful, what we wish for.
What we end up with may be the flip side of the same coin.
Those who do not remember history are destined to repeat it.
Only 9 hrs 50 minutes left before Super Tuesday when the Clown show of Crubios go down.
According to radio news, Cruz has been spreading this story....which means the NY times TOLD HIM first!
Let’s hear the tape!

Liar!!!
“gee, I wonder if Trump knows about this.....what he himself *may* have secretively told the NYSlimes. Oh, noes.”
I agree, which is why I want to end the speculation and hear the tapes. It’s stupid for Trump to not do so.
I’ve always thought that “deport 11 million” is his opening bid of a negotiation with congress. Very little is happening without congress. He can do some things as president but real immigration reform needs congress. And congress (dems and repubs) are going to be negotiating very hard to minimize deportations and maximize citizenship. I feel pretty good about Trump starting with an extreme position then negotiating the best deal for all current citizens and not for immigrants and future citizens.
I also think his preference is to “deport 11 million”. If he can make it happen it will. But if not he can give some. One complaint I hear in person about him is that he won’t give on his extreme positions and he is an authoritarian with a my way or the highway approach. I can’t change people’s minds but maybe the New York Times can release the audio and get Trump a few more votes.
This is one of those things that does exist in some older buildings, but acquired some mythical status that it is widespread. It's not.
This is pure bs. Cruz is pushing it hard too. Funny how this story about a “secret tape” comes out the day before Super Tuesday but not the mythical tape.
“If Trump isn’t as pure as the driven snow, he will be buried under an Avalanche of leaks.
And we all know he isn’t pure as driven snow.”
And you better believe all of his relationships and dealings with Democrats over the last 50 years or so will be front page news.
“Liar!”
I think “unfair speculation” would be more appropriate.
The existence of the tape is undisputed.
I just want to hear it, as should you, as you undoubtedly believe Trump is consistent in public and private.
No reason to fear the tape, assuming Trump is telling you the truth.
Which can mean a lot of things. Repairing a few sections, putting up a little more, some funding to do a little here and there... Oh, and Trump has also made big claims with health care. Don't get me wrong, if it comes down to Trump or Hillary, I will gladly vote Trump. At least I know he loves America and doesn't mind saying it...and I believe he would be pro 2nd Amendment. But I worry about the immigration issue. It concerns me and mine deeply.
That is absolutely not what the book says.”
I agree. In fact one of the deals was with a handshake. That surprised me that he would accept someone’s word without a contract.
Where is Cruz pushing this? I just saw it on Google news.
Yeah, sure. That’s it.
No Sale.
They are his buds. Without much prompting, Trump has ALREADY admitted that he is anxious to make deals with the likes of Reid, Schumer and Pelosi. People are thirsty for an outsider ready to ride herd on Washington, and they are willing to imagine that the obvious fraud Trump is that man.
It would not surprise me one bit if it’s true.
Trump views every situation as a deal. The first position of any deal is just an opening bid.
The Trumpsters that believe that he’s going to do what he’s saying are in for some serious disappointments.
Every single position that he has taken will be significantly watered down if he gets elected. Those are just opening bids.
