The New York Times is sitting on an audio recording that some of its staff believes could deal a serious blow to Donald Trump who, in an off-the-record meeting with the newspaper, called into question whether he would stand by his own immigration views.
Trump visited the papers Manhattan headquarters on Tuesday, Jan. 5, part of a round of editorial board meetings that as is traditional the Democratic candidates for president and some of the Republicans attended. The meetings, conducted partly on the record and partly off the record in a 13th floor conference room, give candidates a chance to make their pitch for the papers endorsement.
After a dispute over Trumps suggestion of tariffs on Chinese goods, the Times released a portion of the recording. But that was from the on-the-record part of the session.
n Saturday, columnist Gail Collins, one of the attendees at the meeting (which also included editor-in-chief Dean Baquet), floated a bit of speculation in her column:
The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesnt believe in positions, except the ones you adopt for strategic purposes when youre making a deal. So you obviously cant explain how youre going to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, because its going to be the first bid in some future monster negotiation session.
Sources familiar with the recording and transcript which have reached near-mythical status at the Times tell me that the second sentence is a bit more than speculation. It reflects, instead, something Trump said about the flexibility of his hard-line anti-immigration stance.
So what exactly did Trump say about immigration, about deportations, about the wall? Did he abandon a core promise of his campaign in a private conversation with liberal power brokers in New York?

Sorry, I lied.
Well, not really, but I had a brain fog senior moment.
Gibbons band was “the moving sidewalks”.
The “13th floor elevators” was a different band around the same time in Houston.
Right era and right place,I just got mixed up.
Were I a democrat party shill editor I’d wait until October.
They want Cruz out of the race completely before they start on Trump.
If that happens Tomorrow they’ll loosen the spigot. Come September/October the floodgates open.
I wonder if there are legal implications when a newspaper conducts “off the record” conversations, and then participates in a sleazy political game like this. Someone at the Times breached that confidentiality agreement and help set this game in motion.
This is double top secret Probation stuff.
I’ll bet it is really cereal.
Cmon, boters.....we are cereal.
WHAT issue? NO ONE KNOWS WHAT WAS SAID YET!
THERE is NO issue!
But you don’t care about REAL ISSUES/REAL PROVABLE CORRUPTION by Cruz.
Wake up.
>> Trump is about to find out the media arent his friends anymore <<
I don’t believe the concepts of “friends” or “enemies” have much to do with the coverage of Trump.
No, I think the coverage is driven mostly by an interesting, even exciting “narrative” — plus the corresponding ratings.
It’s an old pattern. I can remember it going back to the McGovern/Eagleton ticket in 1972, wherein the media love to build a candidate up for a while, then tear him down. This common narrative can make for mesmerizing copy, and it definitely can generate increased readership and viewership.
Anyway, sooner or later the “hero” (as in a Greek tragedy) must be brought down to Earth, best of all in a crash-and-burn fashion.
Therefore, one of these days the media’s narrative-generating-collective-brain will finally conclude that like Icarus, the hubristic Trump has flown too close to the Sun. His wings of wax must melt, and he’ll descend to Earth in spectacular fashion. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
From the article it looks like loose talk in the Newsroom.
So are you saying Buzzfeed made up the quote from the NY Times reporter???
“Police officials said that three Times employees were asked to take showers as a precaution against contamination. The 13th floor, where the envelope was opened, was briefly evacuated, but around 2 p.m., employees on that floor were permitted to return to their offices, according to Catherine J. Mathis, a spokeswoman for The Times.”
It’s also their main reception floor and mailing address.
But it’s all an anti-Trump conspiracy. (/sarcasm)
If it is real, how will you cook the crow?
I’d imagine it will need a lot of seasoning as everything will be hard to swallow when you realize Trump is the candidate and so many people were so easily fooled.
It’s on facebook:

Easy enough to prove Cruz and everyone wrong. Trump just needs to tell the NY Times to release it. He has nothing to fear since I’m sure he didn’t say anything other than making the wall bigger and better.
So, should Trump tell them to release the transcripts or not?
Tell you this....There is nothing tangible about this mystery tape. Who knows what it says or if it actually exists. Best guess, it’s probably nothing as the NYT is no friend of Trump and would gleefully “leak” anything they deemed damaging. Let’s see how Trump responds in the next few days.
As for coordination, it has a lot of bearing on Cruz, a self proclaimed “outsider” apparently running a partnered campaign with the establishment candidate.
Off the record is never truly off the record. It still happened (if true). It’s just that they won’t report it officially. This is what liberals get away with all the time. A wink-and-a-nod with the media. Trump is one of them...he’s fooled a plurality of the GOP base and independents voting in the primary, but it’s not too late to wake up.
A lot of Trumpsters on FreeRepublic are hoping they he breaks his promises to the other side on not on them. They may end up like Trumps previous ex-wives without the prenup...
The more everyone says it the better. We need an uproar demanding he release the info!

I think they’re too “all in” at this point so it won’t matter to them
Much speculation here. Release the transcripts.
