Donald Trump Secretly Told The New York Times What He Really Thinks About Immigration
Buzzfeed ^ | 2/29/2016 | Ben Smith

Posted on 02/29/2016 12:47:40 PM PST by TheThirdRuffian

The New York Times is sitting on an audio recording that some of its staff believes could deal a serious blow to Donald Trump who, in an off-the-record meeting with the newspaper, called into question whether he would stand by his own immigration views.

Trump visited the paper’s Manhattan headquarters on Tuesday, Jan. 5, part of a round of editorial board meetings that — as is traditional — the Democratic candidates for president and some of the Republicans attended. The meetings, conducted partly on the record and partly off the record in a 13th floor conference room, give candidates a chance to make their pitch for the paper’s endorsement.

After a dispute over Trump’s suggestion of tariffs on Chinese goods, the Times released a portion of the recording. But that was from the on-the-record part of the session.

n Saturday, columnist Gail Collins, one of the attendees at the meeting (which also included editor-in-chief Dean Baquet), floated a bit of speculation in her column:

The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesn’t believe in positions, except the ones you adopt for strategic purposes when you’re making a deal. So you obviously can’t explain how you’re going to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, because it’s going to be the first bid in some future monster negotiation session.

Sources familiar with the recording and transcript — which have reached near-mythical status at the Times — tell me that the second sentence is a bit more than speculation. It reflects, instead, something Trump said about the flexibility of his hard-line anti-immigration stance.

So what exactly did Trump say about immigration, about deportations, about the wall? Did he abandon a core promise of his campaign in a private conversation with liberal power brokers in New York?

“But the bottomline was Donald can easily make this go away...just ask the Times to release the story. “

Correct, which is the entire point of my post.

Credibility questioned right there. What building has a 13th floor? Builders usually number the floors ...10, 11, 12, 14, 15... because nobody wants an office located on the 13th floor.

>> No reason to fear the tape, assuming Trump is telling you the truth <<

Bingo. And Trump can authorize the NYT to release the tape, anytime.

So if he doesn’t authorize release, he’s surely hiding something that would be damaging.

(Absolutely no excuse here such as, “The tape is being audited by the IRS.”)

Agreed! I even loved Bubba Ho Tep!

I didn’t know he had a new series, I’ll check it out.

Sorry Rooster, but having lived for a few years in NYC my read is that for someone like Trump, born and raised a rich New York Liberal, the NYT is his paper and the unwashed masses in flyover land, his viewers, voters, hotel and casino customers, and especially his fawning fans, are suckers. In a closed room in Manhattan with his peers what he says is going to be closer to the truth of his intentions.

The link to the public part of the tape is on this thread.

No one is denying the existence of the tape.

Easy enough to shoot down. Release the tape.

Absolutely. The emperor has no clothes here, but his loyal subjects divert their eyes and refuse to see the obvious.

I have no problem with complete openness.

I want to know if a candidate is a liar.

Great. So get off your high horse and demand Senator Principled Conservative stop hiding his taxes and the names of his Super PAC donors.

A political lesson for Trump: when the media hate you, NOTHING is “off the record”.

If it was “off the record”, why are there audio recordings and a transcript of this portion of the meeting?

There’s always the chance Trump is BSing everyone because he wants to be president. I think he honestly loves the country and thinks immigration needs major reform. If that’s true I feel good about him

1) He wants (or at least starts with) 100% deportation - may need to give but can’t be better for starting negotiation

2) He wants to fix all immigration issues - illegals, H1B, visa overstays

3) He’s a better negotiator than anyone else we can vote for - I think the end result will be closer to his goals than Pelosi’s. With anyone else it won’t happen or Pelosi will win.

I think the immigration reform will happen and will be good. I agree with you on the other concerns (ethanol, etc). As much as I dislike the uncertainty on other issues I’ll take good immigration reform as the only “win” for 4 years with whatever loses the republicans in congress are willing to go along with - Rs in congress can stop things if they get a backbone. (I’m assuming he’ll listen to the generals on the military and mid east and will be good on the economy so I’m counting on 3 “wins”)

Ask yourself this?

Why are both Rubio and Cruz saying exactly the same thing about this “tape” today?

There is obvious coordination occurring between both campaigns.

_____________

Are Cruz and Rubio going to release the same NY ‘off the record’ conversations?

Or are they going to release a ‘SUMMARY’ like they did with the TAX RETURNS they PROMISED to release?

Cruz/Rubio LIED. They broke their promises...Trump never made a promise in the first place.

Odds are Trump has no idea what he said. He usually doesn’t. Cruz made that painfully obvious in the last debate.
