Vanity- question about much Cruz bashing on the debate thread
2-26-16

Posted on 02/26/2016 6:47:14 AM PST by InvisibleChurch

I understand Trump is a candidate who has taken the election cycle by storm and I understand his allure. IIRC, I thought Ted Cruz was the favorite candidate here on Free Republic because of his conservative views. What has happened that Cruz is a figure of derision here? I understand Jeb! and Rubio and other mains stream Republicans being poo-poo'ed. Is Cruz getting slammed merely because he is running against Trump? Last night's thread was like stumbling into an alternate Freeperverse. Another question is: If you weren't supporting Trump, would you support Cruz?

I like some of Cruz’s current positions better—such as no touchback amnesty. And some of Trump’s better, such as his tax plan. ANd they are both miles ahead of Rubio.

But Cruz has been slippery on both illegal immigration and TPP/TPA, as well as in some of his campaign practices Supporting Rubio over Trump is over the edge, re-enforcing doubts that people have really had as to how honestly outside the Establishment he ultimately is.

I wish Trump and Cruz had continued their early detente, with Cruz the natural to be #2 to Trump. But that didn’t happen, and when they started swiping at each other, I think that revved up some Freepers. And, honestly, I think Cruz supporters have been the more obnoxious here—so now maybe they are reaping what they have sown.

With Trump I don’t have to worry about voting for Cruz but if by some miracle he gets the nomination Hell Yeah I’d vote for him in a NY Minute:-)

What Cruz’s campaign staff did to Ben Carson was worthy of the clintons.

I’ve been going elsewhere for my news about the election.

Whatever happened to “Thou shalt not speak ill of any Republican.”?

Everyone has a right to support whichever candidate they want but the nastiness just reeks.

Cruz endorsing Rubio over Trump didn't help matters.

The meritless hinting that Trump is a "tax fraud" was positively Clintonian.

Dear Lord, the man is audited every year.

Cruz used to be my second choice. I can see now that he's part of the problem. I'm done with that sleeze bucket.

Trumpbots mimic their leader. And so they mindlessly trash Cruz.

It’s really that simple.

Read the comments. People tend to react poorly when certain Trump posters sole contribution to the thread is emotional personal attack and infantile attack snarks instead of a rational thoughtful commentary.

Stop it with the “they started it” disguise. I posted a serious question about the allure of the Trump campaign the other day (because I’d really like to understand it all) and never got a good response . . . only snark and foul language.

My suspicion is that many Trump people are mostly secular in their world views, and that Cruz is just too “Christian” for them. Seems to really bother them.

Cruz’s political future depends mostly upon how gracious his concession speech will be.

And you can't win with just one third of the GOP.

Trump probably has less than that right now, but he may be attracting some new or independent voters. I worry that Democrats have been crossing over to vote Trump in order to create chaos for the Repubs.

Your suspicion would be wrong. FReepers stopped supporting Cruz because he’s a double dealing career politician hypocrite.

Don’t claim to be pious, make millions and then give basically nothing to charity. Don’t claim to be a consistent conservative and then campaign for the trade agenda of the most lawless POTUS in history. Etc., Etc. Understand?

"Just a little confused."

I hear ya'.
Have learned to stay away from this debate on FR until the smoke clears - dissenting opinions on certain topics encourage pile-ons.

What are some examples of such derision, if you could be specific? I have seen quite a lot of name-calling by Cruz supporters but I seem to have missed corresponding name-calling against Cruz supporters.

Easy...when the poll numbers started to tank, Trump went first after Carson, then Cruz, then Rubio all of whom are more appealing of the remaining candidates than the carnival barker. Since Trump or his supporters can't win on substance, they have decided to run a campaign of insults. Some aren't bright enough to see through the slander and pander for what it is...Hopey changey baloney.

The Trum-pets believe every word Trump says, so when he says Cruz is not a natural born citizen and Cruz is a liar, the debate is over.

Because the trumpsters are about to nominate a “Jesse Ventura” candidate. Ted Cruz is his only threat. They see the New York Progressive Liberal as good thing. This used to be a conservative site but not anymore.

Sorry but Trump has much more support than that. And as for cross over democrats...not so much. You only get party cross over votes when your own party's nomination is certain...and the rats are still fighting it out. Any dem who's crossed over to vote for Trump has most likely done so because they find neither choice in their own party acceptable.
