I cannot stand the taste of coffee. I love the smell of it, I love coffee flavored things like coffee ice cream, but I cannot manage to get myself to enjoy it as a beverage. I really want to learn how to like it, though. I enjoy most foods and drinks, but coffee is my next culinary challenge to surmount. Any advice for a coffee novice like myself? I know that the key to liking foods/drinks that you dislike is constant exposure, but I was wondering what is considered "mild" in the coffee world and something from which I can work my way up.
I like mine black with a little bit of honey in it. I’ve heard others rave about coconut milk in coffee, but I haven’t tried that. Taste also depends on the brand you drink and how you brew it.
There is just something special about adding the aroma of coffee to the stool . . . makes the whole bathroom experience so much better - and I rarely fall asleep!
Trust me on the black eyed chai. Its a chai tea with cream and sugar and two shots of expresso. Tasty.
“There is nothing you can do, you are a supertaster and coffee will always taste bitter.”
I dunno. I really doubt that I am a supertaster. I love every single vegetable. I love dark chocolate (the darker, the better) and I love all other sorts of bitter things. Coffee ice cream is one of my favorite flavors.
Why do you want to like it? Wish I didn’t. I could buy me a boat and a truck to pull it with what I have spent.
It's pretty simple really, just drink it till you eventually like it...........
>>I drink Doctor Pepper in the morning. And I most definitely AM a weirdo.<<
I am so not surprised :)
Get a big bag of crusty Robustos from Costco, maybe 2.99 for a 5 lb sack.
Grind em up.
Use a Percolator.
Let it cook away on your gas flame stove top for the better part of the morning.
Have a small cup of that super concentrated mud.
Maybe with some skim milk?
Do that for a week.
Henceforth, any cup of coffee you ever drink will taste like fresh brewed, just off the drip Dunkin Donuts java baby!

I especially like their *Mad Dog*, *Back Draft* and *Einstein* blends.
Try Columbian Supreme ...it is pretty bland; perhaps use less coffee when you brew to your taste.
Stay away from *dark roasts* they can be strong and oily.
Find a shop that roasts, near you ...wander in and talk to a salesperson [or better yet, the owner] they'll make some good recommendations for you.
IMO, taste for certain coffees, is like developing a taste for single malt scotch, and fine wine.
Don't give up. It's nice you are willing to explore. Have fun!

Yeah, but I wanted to know where to start. I basically said the same thing in the body of my comment. You learn to like new things through constant exposure.
I have several logical reasons for learning to like it. It has to do with my future career, but I won’t get into that. I also hate disliking foods and drinks. I used to be a picky child, but I outgrew that and I’ve learned to love some wonderful things. I want to at least try to learn to like coffee before I say for sure that I don’t.
Excellent problem. Excellent comments.

Follow the Italians: cappuccino in the morning with two scoops of sugar, one espresso at lunch with one scoop of sugar and one espresso at dinner with one scoop of sugar. Yes, Italians love coffee with their sugar.
The big step for me was to move to espresso made from a real espresso machine with a nice foam on top, and I'm not talking cappuccino. At first I had it with the oil from a lemon peel.
But then I went to Italy and they knew nothing about lemon peels. It was the first time I just had real coffee with nothing to alter its taste. Now for 40 years I have only black coffee, but only rarely espresso. But I think it was pure espresso coffee that caused me to truly appreciate real coffee.

I never started drinking coffee until I was about 20.
Still usually drink one cup in the morning to wake up.
I put condensed milk along with sugar in mine.
Might try that.
What brand of tea do you buy? We like Stash Teas :)
I have some coffee ideas, but you are in Washington, shouldn’t there be some great local coffee stores?
I agree with others that buying a top quality fresh coffee, grinding it at home, using good water, optimum temperature and good coffee pot all contribute to a good cup of coffee—key is you want robust flavor but no bitterness :)
Sounds like a wonderful plan. A very costly plan, but in true coffee addict fashion. ;)
