Oh there have been MUCH bigger chokes. And with the starting QB and star receiver hurt not sure how charmed Pitt is.

That was THREE chokes almost consecutively. Never seen anything like it.

The Bengals wouldn’t have even been in the game if an early whistle by the refs

Yes, the dreaded early whistle glitch...

As it was, on both of the Bengals late scores the refs did everything but walk the ball into the end zone for Cincinnati.

on the first TD. the PI looked legitimate...not sure what you mean about the second TD..

Only one choke, the game. Biggest choke ever was the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. They were 2 outs away from winning that series 4-0, then 3 outs away from winning it 4-1. Only team in MLB history to lead a series 3-0 and even have to play games 7, much less lose it.

That IS a big one. But I probably differ in my interpretation of “choke”. To me, it is doing something “bone-headed” to lose a game. Cinci did three such things in the course of about 60 game seconds.

I admit I look through a Cleveland lens. But if I can say “Even the Browns couldn’t lose a game like that”, then to me, you have reached “All time epic” status.

His Wikipedia page says it all

Yup.

On October 6, 2010, Burfict was benched by Arizona State head coach Dennis Erickson. The reason given was Burfict's unusually high number of personal foul penalties.[23] In a game against Stanford, Burfict was called for grabbing the facemask of Doug Baldwin, and after complaining to the referee charged with a personal foul for unsportsmanlike conduct that gave Stanford a first down at the ASU 7.[24] Two plays later, Stanford scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown.[25]

Burfict finished the 2010 season with a team leading 90 tackles, 8.5 for a loss, and two forced fumbles. The Sporting News selected him to their All-American team, as well as Pacific-10 Defensive MVP.[26] Burfict is ASU's first 1st team All-American since Terrell Suggs.

With senior cornerback Omar Bolden lost for the season to a knee injury, Burfict was expected to take over as the leader of the Sun Devils defense in 2011,[27][28] but eventually had a rather inconsistent junior season. Burfict decided to forgo his senior year at Arizona State and entered the 2012 NFL Draft.[29]

Professional career

2012 NFL Draft

When he entered his junior season, Burfict was regarded as one of the best linebackers available in the 2012 NFL Draft, projected to go as high as the No. 5 pick.[5][6][7] Problems on and off the field at Arizona State, however, caused his draft stock to plummet. In October 2011, Sports Illustrated's Tony Pauline still ranked him as the No. 20 prospect on his midseason draft board, but noted that he has been "a loose cannon on and off the field, which has raised red flags."[30]

They bought their tickets. They knew what they were getting into. I say, "Let them crash!"

There were some poor plays, but they were :18 seconds from a victory. The two hotheads made the FG almost guaranteed and the loss ensued.

Pittsburgh moves on to play next week. I don’t care if they leave half their roster home. They are charmed.

The punchline on the the Bengals messups is really no one of them lost them the game, it was a combo. The fumble gave the ball to the Steelers on their 10, and anybody think the Bengals should have kneeled isn’t doing math, they were in long field goal range in the rain and the Steelers had 3 timeouts, they needed to move the ball to at least make it a doable FG. The Burdict hit would have put them in 49 to 50 yard field goal range, again in the rain, easily missable. And really I’m not sure the Burdict hit was deliberate, a guy is responsible for his hits, but having seen a lot of those hits get flags in the last few years I’m not really sure what the player is supposed to do, I don’t think there was any way for him to not hit Brown in the head. It was the icing of Jones’ penalty that moved the FG to makable. There’s the big dumb.

As a non-rah rah Steeler fan, I see the Steelers choking it in the first half. When your defense hold a team to 2 first down in 30 minutes and you only get 6 points in that same half there’s a long list of missed opportunities. Then in the second half the offense didn’t get any better (2 3rd down conversions in the whole game) and the defense started getting soft. The Bengals drove a LOT in the 2nd half, Steelers got some lucky turnover to end drives but it was getting ugly from the first possession. And lots of undisciplined play throughout the game for the Steelers, with the Bengals having the spectacular lack of discipline in the end, but the Steelers took 142 yards of penalties and most of them were 15 yard “acting the ass” penalties, I mean hell one of our COACHES took a 15 yarder for being an ass.

If the Bengals win that the talk of the day is how the Steelers blew it. They played poorly and behaved stupidly through the whole game.

Steelers play Denver, remember when Tebow and the Broncos defeated Pittsburgh in overtime about 3-4 years ago? I think, therefore, Pittsburgh goes on to get revenge; and I’m no Steelers or Broncos fan.

That’s the targeting rule, and that’s not what Shazier did. Quit the crybaby routine.

I the old days Tom had the backbone. I watched that game a few weeks ago where he let his star WR act the fool — it was like this — out of hand.

Can any explain why the Bengals didn’t go for the two-point conversion after their first touchdown?

Or why they put their star defensive end at tailback in the shotgun on the goal line instead of as blocking back ahead of a running back?

You forgot the rest of it

It is a foul if a runner or tackler initiates forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top/crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside the tackle box (an area extending from tackle to tackle and from three yards beyond the line of scrimmage to the offensive team's end line). Incidental contact by the helmet of a runner or tackler against an opponent shall not be a foul.

Note: The tackle box no longer exists once the ball leaves the tackle box.

The ball left the tackle box, hence, no foul.

Yes. That was a terrible series for the Yankees, one for the ages. But let’s not forget that in 1996, when the Yankees played the defending WS champion Braves, the Braves beat them the first two games at Yankee stadium, 12-1, then 4-0. Then the series returned to Atlanta for the next three games, and the Yankees had to face Tom Glavin, Tom Maddox, Steve Avery, and John Smoltz. No one gave NY a shot. What did they do? They won all three games in Atlanta, then closed the series out in NY, against the best pitching staff in baseball. Every time I have to think about the epic choke against Boston in 2004, I feel much better when I remember the 1996 World Series.

Forgot about the Odell Beckham/Norman game - maybe Coughlin knew his time was up in NY and didn’t care by that time. Also, for much of the time Beckham was losing it, Carolina was ahead big - unlike the Pittsburgh/Cincy game that was fairly close throughout.

What is Spearing?
A penalty called when a defensive player makes a tackle that leads with the crown of his helmet into the offensive player. If the initial contact occurs at the top of the helmet, the tackle is illegal. Spearing is a 15-yard penalty against the defense and an automatic first down. The penalty is considered a player safety issue, as hits that lead with the top of the helmet often result in injuries.
