NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- New Orleans is poised to make a sweeping break with its Confederate past as city leaders decide whether to remove prominent monuments from some of its busiest streets.
With support from Mayor Mitch Landrieu, a majority on the City Council appears ready to take down four monuments, including a towering statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Their ordinance has sparked passionate responses for and against these symbols, and both sides will get one more say at a special council meeting before Thursday's vote.

Then they’ll have to tear down the Washington Monument, Jefferson’s Monticello, and shut down most of the states in the US, because at one time or another they allowed or practiced slavery.

It is breathtaking how quickly we have become the Soviet Union. Get the airbrush out. There are old photographs, still. How right you are, Laz.

Like, duh. The entire infrastructure of this horrid land must be destroyed. Railroad tracks must be ripped up and every old brick building (yeah, maybe I have a little Irish in me). Every tree uprooted, every bridge and dam busted. My house (I live in a house that goes back to pre 1750. A minuteman lived in this structure). It has to go. We can not budge one inch into the future until we have obliterated the past. Our future is the obliteration of our past.

Our future is the obliteration of our past. That there is the mantra of the detestable left and their useful idiots, the liberals.

Agreed. Unfortunately my sarcastic stream of conscious ended up with that idea. They actually plan to superimpose the past with the future.

As I’m sure you know, Gen. “Spoons” Butler ordered that inscription be added during the Union occupation of New Orleans under his martial law.

"The question is to you: would you feel it would have been justice if Lee and Davis were hanged? " The Constitution defines treason, assigns Congress the power to prescribe punishments, and gives the President authority to pardon crimes.
After Vietnam, Peanut Cahteh also mass-pardoned draft dodgers, regardless of whether they had been charged or convicted.
So, mass-pardons of Confederates I think were appropriate, even though they clearly met the Constitution's definition of treason.
IOW, what they deserved was justice according to the Constitution, but what they received was mercy, also according to the Constitution.
And there's another factor to remember: nearly all of the top Confederate leaders, including Davis & Lee, after the war called for reunion and reconciliation, and that alone was worth the price of mercy:
"The Meriden Daily Journal stated that Davis, at a reception held in New Orleans in May 1887, urged southerners to be loyal to the nation.
He said, 'United you are now, and if the Union is ever to be broken, let the other side break it.' "

"The Lincoln Coven does not have the ability to answer.
So I assume they would really like for Lee and Davis to have been hanged as traitors.
Shows what kind of creeps these South hating bastards really are." You ASSUME way too much, FRiend.

I am reminded of the ancient Egyptians who chiseled the names of former rulers off of their monuments.

Don't worry. Have no fear. Only the Statute of Robert E, Lee will be removed from the pedestal. It will be replaced with one of two men engaging in sodomy. That will make the Wise Men of New Orleans happy.

The New Orleans city council voted yesterday to go ahead with the removals of 4 statues including Lee's.

The Lincoln Coven here on Free Republic really doesn’t have problem with this removal thing. They pay lips service to history but they are in total agreement with the NOLA city council in this matter.

In 2015 the mix was still 60% African in New Orleans. Not much else to say. Ray was right. It's a Chocolate City. What would one expect?
Interesting that in 1940 it was around 70 white.
