A hoard of Viking coins could change our understanding of English history, after showing how Alfred the Great 'airbrushed' out a rival king
A Viking hoard discovered by an amateur metal detectorist could prompt the re-writing of English history, after experts claimed it shows how Alfred the Great "airbrushed" a rival king from history.
Ceolwulf II of Mercia is barely mentioned in contemporary records and largely forgotten by history, only briefly described in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as an "unwise King's thane".
But as of today, his reputation might be rescued after a haul of coins dug up after more than 1,000 years suggested he in fact had a powerful alliance with Alfred, ruling their kingdoms as equals.
The hoard, made up of 186 coins, seven items of jewellery and 15 ingots, was found by amateur metal detectorist James Mather on his 60th birthday, after he uncovered it in a muddy field.
A selection of the coins show two emperor-like figures, believed to represent Alfred and Ceolwulf, and are now known to have been produced extensively in both kingdoms...
The coins date from the late 870s; the only example of a Viking hoard from the era.
Only one example of the double figured coin from each kingdom has been found previously, with archaeologists left unsure as to whether it was a "one-off" mint.
The new discovery reveals how the coins were produced in both Ceolwulf and Alfred's names, far more extensively than previously thought and in a number of different mints.
"It sheds new light on a very poorly understood period in English history," said Dr Williams.

Macbeth?
to think those countries which had Vikings were a warrior race not to be messed with.
Now countries like Sweden, Norway have turned into a pansy country with girlie men who want to destroy their own country with third world immigrants.
He rode since the snows of winter covered the land, through the kingdom of Mercia, where he found coconuts.
It's genetically hard wired. Just needs to be activated. Kill enough, rape enough, rob enough and start disrupting the economy... as muslims do when they reach about 15-20% of a population. Well then Europe will find themselves a "strong man".
It only took the Spaniards 700 years to push the muslims out. But I figure that the muslims will cause enough internal strife and economic devastation that we'll see Lebanon/Syria/Northern Iraq and parts of Europe that will be interchangeable.
Same with Americans. The sad part is that a lot of African Americans are lining up with the muzzies. They are being sold out and don't have the common sense to see that Hispanics are doing the muscle work in cleaning up ghettos (for instance Compton, California) and becoming the democrat parties new indentured servants.
People are just 3 days without water and 3-4 weeks without food before we go full on berserker with everyone that doesn't "look" like us or belong to "our group".
Look around, there is trouble coming and groups will survive better than loners.
Wow!
Charleston Heston rides again
Would that make him a werewulf?
This post reminded me to look up "Thane".
From a tale of two Kings in England in about 870 AD to Compton California in AD 2015.
Carry on.
They could be carried by a swallow.
And maybe the ghost of Barbarossa.
Valhalla I am coming!
The victors always rewrite the history
Quite true and refreshing to read. I get sick of all the defeatist saying we’re doomed.
The old saying goes, "the winners write the history books", but the actual fact is, the history books write the winners -- and that's the attempt being made here. There's nothing but a few artifacts found, and the ridiculous claim being made is that it completely rewrites the contemporary sources, which were A) not published at the time, and probably unknown outside the writers' ivory towers, and definitely not written under some kind of royal commission; B) Alfred needed a reliable ally to resist and eventually expel the Danes, and replacing the mighty king of Mercia would appear to have made no sense; also C), the country wound up called Eng-land, not Sax-land, showing the importance of the Angle kingdoms during the time of the heptarchy.
