"However, one way of breaking this vicious spiral has been used by some people to reverse the cycle, lose substantial weight, and regain much of their health."
What "WAY" is that,
since diabetes meds are a self-defeating downward spiral ?

A calorie is not a calorie. There is a thermic effect of food and high carb foods have the lowest. In addition, high carb foods shift the balance of candida albicans away from the optimum, thus slowing metabolism and creating cravings for more carbs. This can cause you to become under or overweight and can cause metabolic syndrome. Do not be fooled, junk food will, eventually cause weight and other health issues and most packaged foods are designed to create cravings, while high jacking your taste buds.

Nonsense. We are a far different population than we were in the 50’s. I lived in the 50’s and the only Mexicans and Negroes I saw were in the moviews. In fact, the non hispanic white population of the US was 87% in 1950. Today it is less than 61%.
People are healthier, more fit, and live longer than ever before, doomsayers cries notwithstanding.

Thank you for a very thought-provoking one hour video. I watched it twice. You (and Gary Taubes) have given me some things to try. I appreciate it very much. If there is a ping list, please put me on it.

I watched it (
Reversing Type 2 diabetes starts with ignoring the guidelines | Sarah Hallberg | TEDxPurdueU), and, although I skeptical, it makes a good amount of sense.
Now I'm cautious, because of my age and experience.
I've done the old (1980s) Dr. Adkin's Diet o the old USAF Diet before, and it works, and you feel great.
But you take a large amount of vitamins with it, especially the first 2 weeks.
I'd like to know more about the "fat macro-nutrients" she spoke of, and I'd like to read those studies, with specific types of "fats" and the amount of "fats" consumed.
Thanks for the info in the first video.
Now the second video (
Dr David Perlmutter: Grain Brain, Eating Fat Makes You Smart, and Why (Brain) Size Matters) has some problems that makes it almost unwatchable.
First, it comes off like a used car salesman.
Knock off all the ads.
Second, add some slides of graphics or insert some animations of the work going on inside the cells, or inside the body.
Third, show some pictures of the foods you're talking about. Many years ago, people worked almost all day on the farm.
They ate foods they grew themselves (peas, beans, tomatoes, etc.) and we didn't have the obesity problem that we have today.
When you speak of "fats" most people first think of animal fat, and not vegetables.
Show the difference.

You must not have tried to inject insulin, because it causes fat gain at the injection site no matter where it is; abdomen, legs, etc.

Don't know why, but I just don't retain fat. I don't build up much fast-twitch (bulk) muscle either. Slow twitch muscle, and big tendons.

Yes, I think we agree on all you said. Years ago people burned a lot more calories. They walked a lot more and worked longer hours. There were fewer gyms around. Growing up my father went to the YMCA - the only gym in town.
BTW - two sentences really get my attention: “I’m not going to argue with you” and “With all due respect” Usually what immediately follows is an argument or very little respect. LOL
