Are you a Windows 10 convert responsible for young computer users? Be on your guard. Child-friendly Family Features from Windows 7 and 8 wont be recognised or accepted in the new operating system.
Rather, children using Windows 10 PCs are seen as standard users; no dedicated child-user account exists.
That means any existing age-related website controls, app and game restrictions, PC time limits, plus your ability to view recent activity, wont work on Windows 10.
Adults must now create a completely new set of family settings through a long-winded procedure in Windows 10 that requires the childs participation.
Microsoft had explained the new controls, here, but the details will be lost on many millions following Microsofts advice to run Windows 10 on existing PCs.
Even those getting early builds of Windows 10 got caught out. Those unaware their old settings wont work now risk exposing children on Windows 10 to porn, violence and other online dangers once theyve upgraded.

And it tells you right away after upgrading and give you directions on how to restore them. This isn’t a big deal.
Because parents are too busy to be parents.
“And it tells you right away after upgrading and give you directions on how to restore them.”........
Using Windows 7, tell me exactly WHY I should download the free Windows 10. They system I currently have and use daily does all that I need. I see no real benefit.
I quess noone remembers how each of these upgrades go, huh? You NEVER upgrade the first anything with Microsoft, you let the sneezers and early adopters flush out the bugs for you. Service packs usually come out 2 or 3 months afterward.
Dittos here. I have a number of Win 7 PCs and laptops that should keep me going. I clone my HDDs so that I can recover from a loss quickly. My main "work" computer is Win XP - it's been off the internet for close to 2 years. My email and browsing PCs are Linux. Only one of the Win 7 machines is tied to the internet but it doesn't do any "general" browsing.
You probably shouldn't upgrade. Ever.
Yes, I agree.
Hey, I remember doing the same thing....in Windows WFW311.
Everything old is new again ;')
I am not up on all that has been said about win10, but in case this has not been said:
Have you heard, Win10 hitchhikes-like on your or anyone’s internet connection, using somebody’s bandwidth in order to do their thing with the next computer it wants to connect to.
[ Sorry if I didnt use the right words, hope you get the idea what I was trying to say. Heard it on that o/n pgm that shall not be named by an IT guy. ]
I upgraded right away and it prompted me and it was NO BIG DEAL. Some people just want to poke holes and make mountains out of molehills.
Did you activate the "family features" on his computer before he began to use it? Parental controls, etc.?
This is the Apple crowd who ignores that EVERY new release of iOS was followed (within days) of an update to correct problems.
Sorry to say that there are also some computer users that get pinged by Windows/Apple/anybody else in the place around here.
My personal excuse just happens to be a need to keep ahead of the vendors of all this hardware/software so I can run my business and communicate outside of my immediate area.
I really don’t give much of a damn WHAT the brand name is on anything, I just want the stuff to work for me.
If you really, really like W10 or Linux or anything else that crosses your path, that’s your choice and I’m happy that you’ve achieved your own objectives.
Now, will you pretty please just stick to FACTS and stop wasting my time with all this adhominum BS?
Yes, it has been said . . . You can opt out but you have to know how. There are SO MANY bad choices that Microsoft has made in Windows 10 it just boggles the mind.
Sorry, Erik, I just don't see that. I see Windows users making comments. I have made a couple, but I am a cross platform consultant who uses and supports both platforms. These are legitimate concerns and they are factual. Not everyone is a nerd who can find where Microsoft has hidden the new settings or realizes that all their settings from their old systems have NOT been migrated forward into Windows 10. Nor is your statement about iOS factually true.
This morning I asked him more questions, and he told me that he didn't upgrade yet (whew!), but he wants to. I told him not to. I control both my minor sons' access to the internet by blocking and unblocking it through wireless, but now I suppose I should be even more vigilant.
I haven’t upgraded yet, although I probably will this weekend or next on one computer to see how it goes. Like you, I’m happy enough with 7 — I was happy enough with XP; but Vista was garbage.
The only reason to go to 10 that I can see is that eventually, MS will quit releasing patches for 7. Well, a second reason - it should make life easier for the folks at NSA.
Throw privacy completely out the window with Win10.
Who can I turn to?
