First I got a FReep Mail today tell me that a fellow prepper went to the bank today to get some cash to have on hand mostly one's and quaters (This I recommend) the small the denomnations you us the less like someone is to rob you. It took the bank a good while to gather up the ones that they wanted, it turns out the banks are keeping only limited amounts of cash on hand.
The second Freep mail I go was asking about buying and keeping silver on hand for SHTF. I have only small experence with metals (Other that lead and brass)so I am puting their questions out to you.
Many preppers are buying silver and the price is now affordable for me-would you post my question to the group?
What are the best kinds to get?
I was thinking of mixing it up with a combination of 1oz bars & junk silver, but I’m not sure if this is the right thing to do.
Funny thing I have used my prepper funds to buy thing to keep me and mine alive. I do have some trade goods, but very little in metals, but to show just how FReepers are equal opertunity 'bitchers' I have got a number of down right nasty post and Freep mail some accusing of being a Gold bug metals troll and I've gotten e-mails from gold bugs because I push preps over metal! Go figure!!

Coming from those lacking understanding of the fact that when the time for those alternatives comes, the last thing on anybody’s mind will be the wear on a coin of known authenticity (which junk silver definitely is).

It is, in the practical sense, impossible to ‘fake’ junk silver. The cost of an apparatus to do so would greatly exceed the potential value of the fakes produced.
That is why junk silver is and will remain king.

Nickles have very little value in any condition.
Worn silver will exchange smoothly because everyone knows it is real. There are very few to whom the wear will matter, since no one will be intending to do anything but spend it anyway.

Thanks for the ping. As a former financial planner, I have always considered an investment of up to 10% in precious metals part of a well balanced portfolio.
My preference is American Silver Eagles for the long term portfolio/hedge against inflation. More than that may be useful, if SHTF. (rising real estate and property taxes if SHTF comes to mind). Junk silver could also be useful if SHTF.
Of course, that’s assuming that you have your other emergency supplies in good order and have the ability to replace those supplies(ie self-sufficiency), if the emergency situation outlasts those supplies. JMHO

Would you be willing to amplify on that? So there’s fake silver coins floating around? or is it just made up-nonexistent coins on the books? And not understanding purpose of such if that is the case. Thanks!
I’m surprised that people aren’t buying the silver and then melting into their own ingots - just to be sure of what they are getting. The stories about gold bars with tungsten cores are interesting, and apparently true.
Say you do that, what proof is there that what you have to offer is silver? At least with minted coins, dimes, quarters, dollars, there is some level of verification.
I agree. In any case, stamped or unstamped, I’d use nitric acid to test it. You can even drill a small hole and test the tailings.

I didn’t say there were enough to go around; I said that most sellers are stating that they are “out of stock.”
The point is that they are the most easily identified authentic, circulable alternative to the cash that is soon going to be illegal to own.
No one in their right mind would question their general value.
The way it worked, a silver dollar, two half dollars, four quarters, and ten dimes all contained the same weight of silver (when new), .7734 ounces of silver.
Because of wear, 'junk' silver is commonly estimated at between .72 and .75 ounces per dollar (face value).
The 1964 coins were the last minted and usually hoarded before they became worn much at all, so they tend to command a premium.
