I installed Win 10 Pro on two notebooks:

1) Notebook 1 mfg: 2007 Dell Inspiron D620 Designed for --Win XP, --Vista Capable

Had installed Win 7 on this and it ran terribly. Trying to get the proper drivers for this might have been problematic but even so, it was not a 'Vista Ready" machine. If a machine is "Vista Ready" it should be easily upgradable to Win7/10. So this was a bit of a long shot. In addition this version of Win 7 was legitimate but pirated...software to fool the OS into passing as activated/registered.

But alas, even though it was a 'pirated' installation, Win10 did upgrade and activate with the same product key everyone else gets installed.

Win 10 ran better than my Win 7 installaton on this notebook. With Win7 on this one, it was slow, problematic and Windows Explorer(File Directory) would commonly crash on bad days, and it was buggy, slow and unreliable. However, I have a lot of small startup utilities running: taskbar tweaker, fences, classic shell,etc....these were mucking things up for Win 10 and had to remove them. Alot of these free small utilities are incompatible with Win10 and slow things down, or lock up your desktop icons, etc. So with this notebook its running quicker and smoother than before with Win10. It appears at this early stage that I have a solid and smooth machine, although a bit dated, a bit slow.

2) Dell Inspiron E6410 Notebook mfg: 2010 "Win 7 Ready"

After Win10 installed, I found some of the same issues with my small/mostly free utilities were causing it to be slow for everything to load. Once again jettisoned the usual suspects: Taskbar Tweaker, Classic Shell, fences 1.0 etc Now it runs quick and smooth.

I like Win10 better than Win7. Although I miss my startup utilites. Will do without for now and wait for them to play catch up.

Next up is my Win 8.1 machine.

Graphical user interfaces are highly subjective.

What’s good for you might not be necessarily good for me.

I upgraded my Windows 8.1 Toshiba laptop to 10 and so far am liking it much better. The best thing was that after updating the One Drive it told me that the app was slowing down the computer and took me straight to the Task Manager so I disabled it. Saved me from trying to figure out how to sign out of the One Drive. Don’t care about cloud much.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium. Can I upgrade to 10? A few sites I visit (like Youtube) recently started telling me to upgrade because their site will not support my browser.

Just finished installing on my main laptop and I’m absolutely loving it. It really looks pretty slick.

The installation was insanely painless (which was shocking). So I’m set to upgrade the wife’s laptop and a tablet tomorrow.

I installed Win 10 on my Dell desktop a couple of days ago. So far the only problem I have encountered is that permissions on directories were set so that I could not write or save to them, even though I was Administrator. There were no fixes I could find online, so I had to resort to going to each directory and changing the permissions.

Still no word on release dates for the drivers, Just the month.

Sony sure stepped on their Johnson on this one.

I’ve done two Win8.1 machines and I am waiting on my Win 7 machine to get notice. The Win 7 was a Vista Basic computer when new. I moved it up to Vista Premium, then 64bit Win 7.

Should be ok.

People talk bad about Vista, but, I never had an issue with it, nor have I had one with 8.1. It worked and worked well on my machines.

The main thing is to look at the suggested requirements, not, the minimum requirements, to see if your system can handle it.

Does W10 make my PC more or less personal than XP?

I’ve put it on two notebooks - Dell Latitude E6500 and E6400 - they are pretty old, but work well - came with Vista, upgraded to Win 7 64, now Win 10. Works fine.

I’ve also updated my XPS 8700 (i7, 16GB ram, SSD, 4GB Nvidia) it was running 8.1 and I’m glad to see that gone, but it really was not an issue as I booted to desktop.

I’ve also updated my older XPS 430 (bought with Vista, took it to Win 7 64) and that runs great too.

The only issue I’ve run into - the PDF printer in Relux no longer worked - uninstall/re-install fixed that.

I have another E6400 that I used to run the previews on and that one has turned out to be somewhat of a pain to get to the released version. It only had an 80GB HDD, so I swapped in a 250GB and had to re-install win7 so I can take the update path - it has a Vista COA and Win10 won’t take it - all my surviving notebooks (all Dell Latitudes) are from the Vista era.

So far I’m quite happy with it. It’s what win 8 should have been.

I run several old XP utilities that I had to jerry-rig to work under Win7. I doubt they will work at all under Win10.

One set requires IE9 or older. They would not work under IE10.

The aggravating thing is that newer versions of those utilities never came about. In some cases, the individual or company that created them moved on. In some cases, the programmer is deceased.

To me, the utilities are more important than a new glitzy UI and no comparable utilities seem to exist.

==

I also have some hardware that would probably be defunct under Win10. One it a USB PCTV program that runs with Media Center. I read that Media Center was removed from Win10.

==

I will read the reviews, etc., to see how Win10 holds up. I have already read of some auto-updates (which cannot be turned off) have caused serious problems during some of the ‘beta’ testing.

MS has a history of releasing updates that lock up desktops and/or laptops, or otherwise create havoc when installed.

The devil made me install Windows 10. However, it seems to work OK but with some small issues. I had a driver problem and ended up doing a reinstall that removed some programs. I have reinstalled the programs and things are working OK. I am finding a lot to like about Windows 10. If I were to do this again, I would do a clean install. Overall, Windows 10 is quite likeable and a vast improvement over the abomination of Windows 8

Does anyone know if there’s a easy way out if something goes wrong with the Win 10 install (such as a restore point)?

Whatever floats your boat. I was never interested in “upgrading” from XP. I have 7 on one computer and it’s hardly different and works better and worse in various ways than XP. Now when I am eventually forced to upgrade to 10 I’ll lose more of my older utilities and have to replace them. That is if new comparable ones are even available.

Looks like Microsoft is following the usual pattern of every other OS sucking very hard.

Me being a virtual illiterate, can I get some guidance here from someone who's taken on such an operation?

My great Win 7 PC burned up this past winter, so I got an HP all-in-one, but with no option other than 8.1; I had the local shop do the Classic Shell thng, but I'm still less than impressed.

Batavia be a bit nervous about the next steps....

Well, there goes any chance I’d be upgrading anytime soon, since Taskbar Masher is a must to get EQ2 to behave properly in windowed mode.
