Perhaps so. I was an Army puke at Ft. Jackson (1967)and we arrived at the in-processing center in the wee hours of the morning. Marines probably are not much different in this respect.

My older brother was drafted for Nam. He told me that when the bus load of draftees arrived at the base,most of the guys had paperback books and some kind of snacks too. As the got off the bus the DIs laughed and said: "Look at these Sh!tbirds!" Another DI took the lid off a big metal trash can and all books and snacks were thrown in there.

I used to be the OIC of the Shot Team at the reception Battalion on Fort Jackson.
I would often walk by the amnesty box and take a peek inside, amazing the stuff you would see in there.
IV needles, condoms, all sorts of medicine. Knives. Brass knuckles.

The Marine Corps holds events where recruits waiting to go to boot camp and other interested prospects can get a small taste of what life will be like when they step on the yellow footprints at either MCRD San Diego or Parris Island.
It can be intense, but it in no way will prepare them for the hell that will be unleashed on them the second they step off the bus for real.
The night I stepped on those yellow footprints on Sept 26 1984 is burned into my soul!
