My older brother was drafted for Nam. He told me that when the bus load of draftees arrived at the base,most of the guys had paperback books and some kind of snacks too. As the got off the bus the DIs laughed and said: "Look at these Sh!tbirds!" Another DI took the lid off a big metal trash can and all books and snacks were thrown in there.
I used to be the OIC of the Shot Team at the reception Battalion on Fort Jackson.
I would often walk by the amnesty box and take a peek inside, amazing the stuff you would see in there.
