Search for extraterrestrial intelligence gets a $100-million boost

Russian billionaire Yuri Milner announces most comprehensive hunt for alien life.

You could say that the silence has been deafening. Since its beginnings more than half a century ago, the dedicated search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) has failed to detect the presence of alien civilizations. But at London’s Royal Society today (20 July), Russian billionaire Yuri Milner announced a shot in the arm for SETI: a US$100-million decadal project to provide the most comprehensive hunt for alien communications so far.

The initiative, called Breakthrough Listen, will see radio telescopes at Green Bank in West Virginia, the Parkes Observatory in Australia, and the Lick Observatory's optical telescope in San Jose, California, scanning around one million stars in the Milky Way and a hundred nearby galaxies. Milner is also releasing an open letter backing the idea of an intensified search; it has been co-signed by numerous scientists, including physicist Stephen Hawking. “In an infinite Universe, there must be other life,” Hawking told luminaries at today's launch event. “There is no bigger question. It is time to commit to finding the answer,” he said.

“We would typically get 24–36 hours on a telescope per year, but now we’ll have thousands of hours per year on the best instruments,” says one of the project leaders, Andrew Siemion, a SETI scientist at the University of California, Berkeley. “It’s difficult to overstate how big this is. It’s a revolution.”

Its not my money so I don’t care but if he attracts unwanted alien attention I’m kicking somebody’s ass.

Terrestrial intelligence is getting hard to find these days; it makes sense to expand our search.

I don’t know why Hawking is so enthusiastic about this. He’s been sounding the alarm bells for years.

Green dudes that could get here are obviously more intellighen than us. At best they will quarantine the planet for the good of the universe and I would not blame them.

Not much intelligence here on Earth, so look up there.

Search for ‘Active Seti controversy David Brin.’ The went ahead and started doing focused bursts at things with no debate. Board members quit over it.

If we find anything, you can be 100% certain our kumbaya idiots will try to make our presence known. So... we should set a trap for the marauders... giant concealed nuclear lasers made ready for them on the moon, humongous hyper-speed nuclear missiles, 100 megatons and above, also hidden around the solar system, and a giant welcoming party of kumbaya idiots out in front of it all with idiotic smiles plastered on their idiotic faces... whatever we can come up with. Annihilate them and steal their technology. Oh, sure, a modern army could crush a primitive forest tribe, no problem. But not with poison frog darts sticking out of the back of their necks!... BWAHAHAhahahahahaha!

It’s a good observation. People like Hawking are pretty adamant there “must be” other life out there somewhere. Why are they so insistent?

I say it’s because, if they don’t find other life, then their “life arose from nothing” premise is basically falsified. If life only exists on Earth, that implies there was some intervention or special act necessary to create life, and that means the godless universe they dreamed up to escape accountability is a mirage.

“So... we should set a trap for the marauders... “

Well, we’ve already stocked the planet with liberals, isn’t that enough of a trap?

In reality this is just listening so it wouldn’t attract any attention even if they did find something.

After years of thinking about this I’ve reached the conclusion that there would be no good reason for aliens to come here. Anything they could possibly want is found in vast abundance in space and is there for the taking except for animal protein. I suppose colonization is another reason to come here and that wouldn’t be good for us.

It always cracks me up when sci fi shows portray malevolent aliens coming to earth to take our water or use us for slaves. The components for water “Hydrogen and Oxygen” are among the most abundant elements in the universe. (Hydrogen is the single most abundant and water is in the top 10) Interstellar aliens can make water and making robotic slaves is a lot more effective than using limited humans.

If there is intelligent life out there, you can take it to the bank that we won’t find it.

Has Mr. Milner tried Area 51?

Art Bell would be happy to take him there, and for much less than 100 mil...

I hope they find some out there as there doesn’t appear to be any on this planet.

I predict that “extraterrestrial intelligence” will be “found”, but it will be bogus. These alleged “superior beings” will counsel us on, guess what, “climate change” and “one world government”. They will in fact be demonic forces preparing the world for the Antichrist. Just my opinion.

Hawking and Dawkins are going to be in for a real treat once they turn in their life-badge.

In the end, all of that “knowledge” they possessed resulted in nothing!

This is factually wrong. SETI got the “WOW signal” hit once. A radio wave believed to have come from an alien transmission. It was never repeated so it could have been accidental.
