To the north of California's famous San Andreas fault is a less known, but possibly more deadly, fault line. The Cascadia subduction zone runs some 700 miles from northern California to Vancouver.

In a deeply reported article for The New Yorker, Kathryn Schulz tells the tale of how this fault lies dormant for periods of 243 years, on average, before unleashing monstrous tremors. The Pacific Northwest is 72 years overdue for the next quake, which is expected to be between 8.0 and 9.2 in magnitude.

" I am worried about the ticking time bomb under Yosemite."

Worrying about supervolcanoes is like worrying about high energy gamma ray bursts. There really is nothing to worry about. We'll all pretty much be dead pretty quick.

Everybody needs to read this scenario too—it’s probably more possible than a “big one”.

I’m about 1/4 mile from ocean - sitting right on Newport/Inglewood fault. That’s the one they’ve been talking about blowing next. I don’t think about it until I occasionally notice all the tsunami escape routes posted all over town.

Some of us were here on FR when the Japan earthquake struck and someone posted a link to live Japanese tv coverage. One station had an aircraft airborne over the coast when the tsunami rolled in and we watched it live as it rolled in over the land... And it rolled up the bays and rivers for I believe it was some 70 miles inland and we watched live here as people died trying to drive away from it... The more it rolled up the rivers the larger and thicker it go. It is not just people at the seashore who would die

Anyone without water for 3 days could be toast and beyond FEMA reach or help. A lot of urban and suburbanites have no idea how to fend for themselves

Believe it or not—it won’t happen while we’re here.

He’s said this before:
GENESIS 18:32
Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

The remnant are the salt preserving the spoiling meat. Once we’re gone—this nation and the world are toast.

This fearmongering nincompoop Schulz, is a science moron. Embarrassing, even.

Jonathan Gruber is not the only scam artist capitalizing on the utter ignorance of the American public

Saying nonsense like "we are 72 years overdue for the next quake" displays total misunderstanding and science incompetence of statistics and probability.

Natural catastrophic events never occur on a schedule, and saying "we are 72 years overdue' is an absurdity, when applied to events uccuring over tens or hundreds of thousands of years.

If you live on the west coast, you need to read the entire article and stop the juvenile smart-assed comments.

Hey wait a minute!

I haven't even posted on the thread yet!

Wonder if it’s more likely Iran detonates something nuclear over US first

And we are near the average end for interglacial warming periods. An ice age will cause the worst disruptions of any of the described disasters.

Perhaps the folks of California, Oregon and Washington should read The Book of Micah....but of course, they are probably MUCH better people then those of Samaria and Jerusalem.... Don't you think..?

Very frightening......

Twenty minutes to get to high ground before the tsunami hits.

Start to run when you hear dogs barking, they can sense the earthquake coming.

Because FEMA does not help. They hinder, hamper and harm.

Now, don't forget, if you are a 'prepper', FEMA will take your stuff and hand out some of it to those who didn't prep one bit and didn't have so much as a can of beans in their cupboards.

Maybe the “big one” would trigger an eruption of Mount Rainier.

No, DC isn’t on much of a fault line. For DC you need to focus on a tsunami coming in from the ocean.

How can a Yellowstone “blow up” be overdue? Has there been a series of events?
