From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I sprinkle Cheyenne pepper on my bugs, on the ground, on the plant, squash bugs hate Cheyenne pepper mixed with a little soap and a bit of veggie oil. But the pepper is straight on the ground.

I love both of my wiggly hoses. I have one 50 feet and one 100 feet. Both do a great job. I got tired of lugging the other hoses around.

this has been one very strange garden season. First horrible dry, and then major wet. A nasty recipe for weeds. Especially when you have to leave for a wedding right when the drought breaks.

But I have ripe plum tomatoes already and bell peppers already. I have July crops in June due to the the warm May we had.

“One of the repair guys overheard and suggested aviation fuel.”

A friend of mine lurks on every garden thread. She said this about your aviation fuel comment:

“Just read the post from Proud-texan inquiring about aviation fuel. JD uses that exclusively for all equipment (log splitter, weed wacker, lawn mower, chain saw, etc.) because it doesn’t damage the motor like regular
gas does. He gets it at a little airport near Boerne. Pass this on if you think it will help.”

That’s excellent, thanks. I’d seen some chatter elsewhere but was kinda worried about that lead, good to hear it from a friend. Off to find an airport...I am sick and tired of ethanol related problems.

The remnants of tropical storm Bill blew threw last night. We got 1.04 inches of rain in about 2 hours, maybe less. This morning, there are a few small limbs down and I had to straighten up some things around the garden, but the overall result is some very happy plants! Everything looks green and wonderful with all of that rain.

Also today, I noticed I have my first ripe tomatoes - they are the Sugar Sweet cherry size tomatoes and they are orange rather than red and amidst the green foliage, they’re like little globes of sunshine. I ate two straight off the vine and the other two will be picked later today. My new current issue is the murder of crows that hang out around the garden in the morning - they got the largest Black Krim tomato. It was still very green so I didn’t think they’d be going after the tomatoes this early - live and learn. The temporary netting I took down just Wednesday is going back up in a different configuration to keeps the crows off of the tomatoes .... there’s always “something” going on around here with the wildlife!

Wonder of wonders...an absolutely PERFECT day for the garden here in soviet Red Hampshire...the passage of TD Bill has left us with a ‘greenhouse’ day in its wake...cloudy with diffused sunlight, a light wind under 5 MPH, seventy degrees, with high humidity of 80%. Stunning array of tomato, corn, pole bean and pepper plants...as nice as I have ever seen...loads of stocky volunteer tomatoes coming up, as well...now the game is to see what we get.

That’s the truth. Went to CA for a couple of weeks, when we got back, the weeds were knee high.

With aviation gas, does one need to add the supplement used for ethanol or can the aviation gas be used straight in the 2-cycle engines?

I’m guessing not since Sta-bil is designed to counteract the effects of ethanol separation (or at least that’s how I understand it). If I can track some down I’m thinking I’ll only add some good oil and that’ll be that.

Proud_texan :" I’m guessing not since Sta-bil is designed to counteract the effects of ethanol separation (or at least that’s how I understand it)."

Exactly true !
I understand that it prevents the separation of gas and ethanol, and minimizes any water condensation in the gasoline engine tank, as well as any storage tank.
Also , after a longer period of time than normal , the same gas may need 'refreshing' by additional stabil.
Also , there is another product called "Pri- ###" that does the same thing as stabil (possible competative price comparison), but are more 'specialized :
"Pri-G" for gasoline
"Pri-D" for diesel
"Pri-Marine" specialized for aquatic gas engines (boat/ jetski/ etc.)
Follow the length of safe fuel storage which is listed on the bottle , and the tanks can be refreshed indefinitely.

Hardens Hollow :" I have some critters that LOVE my Swiss chard. It is growing well, but the big beautiful leaves are pockmarked with holes (#1 problem).
And my bean plants have reddish bugs hanging out on them, making webs of many of the leaves (#2 problem). "

Problem #1 sounds like 'flea beetles', or 'leaf hoppers'
Problem #2 sounds like spider mites.
Go to Bing images to see if you can identify the bugs and/or by the damage.
I have heard of others using 'Neem oil' for bug control but I have no personal knowldge from using it.

Perilla isn’t generally “cooked”. I have used whole it in fried spring rolls. Sure, you can get the seeds over the internet.
You’ll only have to plant it once. It comes back year after year as volunteers. (BTW - the chickadees love the seeds)
