Microsoft's next generation of its operating system, Windows 10, is due to be released next month.
The company said PCs and tablets running the software would go on sale on 29 July, at which point the OS would also be offered as a free download to existing users.
The roll-out of the product for smartphones, Xbox games consoles and other kit will follow later.
One expert said the release could prove critical to the Microsoft's fortunes.
Windows 8 - the current iteration - has had a troubled life, with many deciding not to update to its touch-centric user interface.
The company has acknowledged the fact by returning some features dropped from the more popular Windows 7.

There’s a Windows Update you can uninstall to make that go away. I never upgrade my OS in place, at most I’ll setup a dual boot with a new harddrive. I don’t believe in sacrificing what is working for what might.
Thanks, I’ll just wait awhile.
Whoa looks like you triple boot lol, I did dual booting with XP and 7 a while back but with hyper V technology, I find it easy to run an XP VM than dual boot. Also in your opinion how did you like the graphical user interface of 10, do you feel its like 7 or like 8?
Kids will probably adapt quicker.
How would you do that? I read where if you bought a new drive you couldn’t do that since the license was only for one PC.
I “adapted” almost instantly. See that “All Apps” item bottom left of the menu? Guess what it does ...
Reserved an upgrade and it looks like you’ll have 1 year to install it once notified. Still conflicting recent stories on what happens after that. Will we have to pay for Win 10 a year after we install? If so how much? No solid answers on these.
Well it looks fine to me and I tend to be a quick learner for PC things for I work in the IT field but as long as the desktop area is 7 like then its fine, also I damn glad this according to MS will be the last windows release, the rest just being constant updates and fixes, I just love how apple leaves things alone like the GUI while MS just feels it needs to always be changed which I hate it.
Just like I described ... ;'}
I read where if you bought a new drive you couldnt do that since the license was only for one PC.
By cloning the drive, you preserve all the licensing information ... the two drives are interchangable. Your "one PC" is largely identified by the hardware MAC address assigned to its built-in wired ethernet interface. Changing hard drives, video cards, etc. has never caused any PC under my control to have an identity crisis. Even adding a USB WiFi device has always been OK.
I read where the Start Menu can be full page but doesn’t have to be ( change settings ) in Win 10.

The new icon is to subscribe to a notification on July 29 that the download is ready to download.
The new icon does NOT begin downloading W10.
Yes ... see the screen shot in #24? On the current release of Win10, there would be a little arrow just outside the upper-right corner of the tile lableled "Mint" in that screenshot. That arrow switches between what you see in #24, and a full-screen menu/tiles. Windows 8.1 lacks that arrow, and is always only the full-screen of tiles.
Registered for the upgrade and they say you aren’t committed when it does come. Had to give my email on my new Win 7 machine but just hit the icon on my sister’s 6 yr old laptop and it registered it without adding an email.
Browser question. Just got a new machine and it came with Google Chrome which I’ve been using for the last week. Better than IE but still I don’t think it’s as good as Firefox. Was using Firefox on my last XP machine. Should I keep going for a little while longer just to learn Chrome or jump over to Firefox?
Got really brought down as my last machine had hardware and software problems but did allow me to transfer all files to a flash drive. Over 15 years ( from previous computers ) of pics vids, and documents but well over 99% were things I could live without. Sad.
And what happens if your machine crashes and needs to be rebuilt - presumably with 7 or 8 and then re-updated to 10?
It showed up on mine this morning. Any way to get rid of it?

You're absolutely right - sorry for being unclear in my post.
No clue. What does it do?
I was happy with XP. I guess I won’t be able to play my XP games on 10 unless I spend a week trying to find whatever it is that will download more carp onto the puter and still won’t run them as well as XP, right?
For later.
