How would you do that? I read where if you bought a new drive you couldn’t do that since the license was only for one PC.

Just like I described ... ;'}

I read where if you bought a new drive you couldn’t do that since the license was only for one PC.

By cloning the drive, you preserve all the licensing information ... the two drives are interchangable. Your "one PC" is largely identified by the hardware MAC address assigned to its built-in wired ethernet interface. Changing hard drives, video cards, etc. has never caused any PC under my control to have an identity crisis. Even adding a USB WiFi device has always been OK.

Do a full backup of your computer to a USB disk using Windows backup. The backup will be saved as a VHD file on your USB drive. That VHD is essentially a clone of the computer and can be used to spin up VMs, for instance.
